Recap / Static Shock S 2 E 1 Sunspots

Go To

Virgil's class covers sunspots, which affect electrical fields around Dakota. Virgil finds to his dismay that not only is he missing history sessions with Daisy, but also the sunspots are making his powers go out of control. Just as he think he can handle it, Hot Streak returns to school, ready to learn and burn.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Robert objects to Virgil dating. He admits the idea bothers him not because his kids are getting older, but because that means he is, as well. Sharon questions why that is, saying Robert's been old as long as she's known him. He can't help but chuckle at that one.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Virgil's Power Incontinence causes his bedroom furniture to move next to his bed. Sharon sees the end result and thinks Virgil is just being very weird. She proceeds to grumble about her parents not stopping after one child.
  • Big "YES!": Static after taking down Hotstreak.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Virgil briefly when he uses up too much of his electricity. His powers come back during a fight with Hot Streak.
  • Can't Stay Normal: Richie lampshades this. Virgil may want a normal life, but subconsciously he would miss being the hero.
  • Chronic Villainy: Francis's anger management lessons don't stick. He's back in jail by the end of the episode.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: The restored Static talking how the sunspots are history causes him to realize that he once again forgot about a study session with Daisy.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Francis insists that he had a lot of counseling to manage his rage. Virgil and Richie are certain it won't stick, and they're proven right.
  • Hidden Depths: Virgil points out to Daisy that he used to be an honor roll student. His grades only took a hit after he became a superhero and no longer had time to study.
  • Jumped at the Call: After saying he actually likes having a less complicated life, Virgil sees Francis hassling a student and lapsing back into villainy. Despite not having his powers, Virgil immediately steps in both as himself and later as Static. Richie acknowledges how he just loves being a superhero too much.
  • Mistaken for Profound: When their teacher is giving a lesson about sunspots and asks if anyone knows how long the effects of sunspots last. He eventually picks Richie to answer, and Richie, caught flatfooted, says "not me" to say he doesn't know. His teacher though says that is actually the correct answer, because nobody can tell how long sunspots will last.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Daisy is pleasantly surprised when Virgil shows up for their study session and shows he has done the work. That's when Richie finds out that Virgil is briefly depowered.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Richie and Virgil when Hotstreak returns to the school.
    • Virgil when he realizes he forgot his study session with Daisy.
    • Hotstreak when Static blasts open the water tower right beside him.
  • Only Sane Man: When Virgil tries to confront Francis, Richie stops him and reminds him that he doesn't have powers.
  • Power Incontinence: Virgil's powers go haywire thanks to the sunspots. On one hand, this gets him out of his history test. On the other, it causes a ruckus.
  • Something We Forgot: After Virgil's powers reset to normal, he goes Oh, Crap! on realizing he forgot his study session with Daisy.
  • Status Quo Is God: Lampshaded, with Virgil having been studying Warren Harding's term as President, specifically the promise of a "return to normalcy".
  • Wake Up, Go to School & Save the World: After (briefly) losing his powers, Virgil is disappointed, but he also admits he actually does like having a normal life where he doesn't have to juggle extra responsibilities that complicate his personal life. On the other hand, he can't resist jumping into action when Hotstreak flips out.
