Recap / Static Shock S 1 E 8 Sons Of The Fathers

Go To

Virgil asks Richie why they never hang out at Richie's place. After some hesitation, Richie agrees to host him for one night. Things go pear-shaped when Virgil meets Richie's father, who is a Jerkass bigot. Richie, embarrassed by his father and angry on Virgil's behalf, runs away.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Badass Bystander:
    • At the beginning of the episode an old woman that Shiv tries to rob maces him in the face with some pepper spray. After Ebon and Shiv retreat and Static captures Talon the same old woman cheers for Static for his work.
    • Some thugs tell Richie's father and Mr. Hawkins where to find Ebon and Richie. The two then go Papa Wolf to save Richie from the metahuman.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Richie calls out his father for being a racist when the latter chases Virgil away.
  • Distressed Dude: Ebon kidnaps Richie after hearing him talking to Static, in the hopes of finding out Static's secret identity. Static manages to find him thanks to Richie turning on their walkie-talkies and loudly talking about their location.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Shiv pointing out the unlikelihood of even Static being able to break Talon out of major lockdown.
  • Irony: Robert asks Static if his folks know where he is. As Static's the superhero guise of his son Virgil, clearly they don't.
  • Missing Steps Plan: Ebon kidnaps Richie after finding out he is friends with Static, and plans to hold him hostage until Static can return Talon to them. Shiv points out that Talon is under major lockdown, so there's no way Static can even get to her, but Ebon dismisses that as "Static's problem", and Richie's too by extension.
  • Multitasked Conversation: Richie refuses Ebon's demand to contact Static, but his communicator is still on. Richie instead actively describes the hideout's location, framing it as how Static would never want to set foot in this dump. By the time Ebon discovers the communicator, Static is already well on his way there.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Richie running away leads to Ebon kidnapping him. On the other hand, it also allows his dad to undergo Character Development.
  • Poor Communication Kills: If Richie hadn't been embarrassed of his father, then he would have explained to Virgil why his home isn't a nice place for a black kid.
  • Time Skip: By the episode's end, Mr. Foley seems to have made apologies to Virgil for his earlier remarks in addition to making up with his son.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Robert calls out Sean for his racism, saying he is a stubborn man who refuses to change with the times and is proud of it. He also says that because of that attitude he will never really know his own son, despite him being one of the best and brightest.
Robert: Richie ran away from you a long time ago Foley. And who can blame him?
  • The Scapegoat: Averted, as Virgil doesn't begrudge Richie in the slightest for the views of his father. Richie is rather surprised, as he wouldn't have blamed Virgil if he did.
  • True Companions: Virgil tells Richie that no matter what his father says, they are friends.
  • Very Special Episode: About racism.
  • Wham Line: Virgil overhears Richie's dad's racist remarks on how he associates him with the "thugs" he so despises, hitting him hard with the truth on why Richie is embarrassed by his father and didn't invite him sooner.
  • Xanatos Gambit: The Missing Steps Plan is actually one for Ebon. Either Static somehow frees Talon from police custody, or Ebon gets to stick it to Static by taking out Richie. However, Richie throws a wrench in this by covertly tipping off Static to his location.
