Recap / Stargate SG 1 S 7 E 5 Revisions

Go To

The team visits a planet whose inhabitants are protected from its toxic atmosphere by a domed shield, but realize something is amiss when the townspeople begin to disappear one by one and those who remain claim to have no memory of them ever existing.

"Revisions" provides examples of the following tropes:

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: The Link, which is programmed to maintain the population within its dome, regardless of the wills or lives of the individual people inside of said dome. It also actively fights any attempts to have its system altered in any way, editing the memories of those connected to it, then trying to edit the memories of anyone who isn't connected who has proof contradicting those edits.
  • Bizarrchitecture: Whenever the dome shrinks, the places move around as Jack and Teal'c find out when Nevin tells them they are going the wrong way to his house, where they spent the previous night. They both agree that was not where the house was supposed to be, but their haz-mat suits were there.
  • Brainwashing for the Greater Good: At the end of the episode, Carter and Pallan hack into the computer system and erase all reference to the team from the Link in order to prevent the townspeople from attacking O'Neill and Teal'c.
  • Cold Equation: The townspeople are randomly sent outside to their deaths by the computer so that resources aren't depleted too quickly as the dome continues to shrink.
  • Death World: The atmosphere outside the dome is a mixture of various corrosive gases that can quickly strip a person's flesh from their bones and even dissolve the skeleton given enough time.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Discussed when a councilwoman is sent outside the dome and the team suspect that the other members of the council may have had something to do with her disappearance:
Teal'c: Perhaps the councilwoman opposed the others and they felt it necessary to be rid of her.
Daniel: So they erased her from existence? That seems a little harsh, don't you think?
  • Domed Hometown: The town is kept under a domed force shield that protects it from the poisonous atmosphere outside. Unfortunately, it's slowly losing power and shrinking to accommodate for the loss, while the townspeople are kept none the wiser.
  • Hazmat Suit: The team wear hazmat suits to reach the dome when they arrive on the planet, since the Stargate is beyond its limits.
  • Hero-Worshipper: The first person on the planet that the team encounter is a child called Nevin, who instantly takes a liking to O'Neill and decides that he wants to be an explorer like him.
  • Neuro-Vault: The townspeople are all connected via a device on their foreheads to "the Link", which downloads information directly into their brains whenever they want to access it.
  • Ret-Gone: Every time somebody is sent outside the dome, the Link erases everybody else's memories of them, so they're never any the wiser about their ever-shrinking population.
  • Rock Beats Laser: Basically the reason Daniel is eventually able to convince Pallan of their claim that the Dome is shrinking; while the Link altered their memories and electronic records, it never altered the original paper plans and legal documents drawn up when the Dome was originally created, which showed that it was designed for over 100,000 residents as opposed to the current 1 300.
  • Space Amish: Other than the Link and the dome, the townspeople have decided to eschew all modern technology in favor of a simpler way of living, as it was industrialization that poisoned their atmosphere to begin with.
