Recap / Stargate Atlantis S05 E04 "The Daedalus Variations"

Go To

This isn't exactly our Daedalus, we're just borrowing it for a while.
Sheppard

A ship appears out of nowhere above Atlantis. Literally out of nowhere — there wasn't even a hyperspace window. Its automatic identification reveals it to be the Daedalus, badly damaged. Which is doubly odd, since the Daedalus is weeks away from Atlantis at the moment, in the void between galaxies.

Tropes:

  • Alternate Universe: The alternate Daedalus is equipped with a drive designed by an alternate McKay that allows it shift between parallel universes at will.
  • Apocalyptic Log: Teyla retrieves the last entry in the ship's log, in which the commander states they are abandoning ship.
  • Deus ex Machina: In-universe, in the third alternate reality. Atlantis is under bombardment from the alien marauders, shields failing, when all of a sudden Daedalus appears out of thin air and blasts the attacking ship, then disappears a few minutes later.
  • Expendable Alternate Universe: Averted when Sheppard opts to save alternate Atlantis. This does seem to be Ronon's attitude though, asking if Teyla will starting worrying about a million million Torrens.
  • Gatling Good: The Daedalus is fitted with railguns. In Space!
  • Ghost Ship: The Daedalus had been abandoned and the team try to figure out why.
  • Now Do It Again, Backwards: Sheppard's suggestion of putting it in reverse — which is eventually what works.
  • Outside-Context Problem: The alien marauders from the third alternate reality.
  • Pressure-Sensitive Interface: The Daedalus autonomously travels through parallel universes and eventually meets one full of hostile aliens, facing them to attack. Needless to say, Ronan is jamming on the rail gun button, then Sheppard says, "Take it easy, Chewy."
