Recap / Stargate Atlantis S04 E17 "Midway"

Go To

Teal'c: So tell me then. Is it true that negligence on your part is what first alerted the Wraith to your presence? That your reckless actions brought about the deaths of thousands of innocent...
Ronon: THAT'S A LIE!!!
Teal'c: (calmly) Indeed it is. Yet should such a question arise during your interview, I trust you will not respond in a similar manner.

Teal'c drops by Atlantis and it's not long before he and Ronon are clashing. But when SG-1 is attacked by a Wraith squad, it's up to them to stop it.

In short: Teal'c and Ronon against Wraiths. Bad-ass moments ensue.

Tropes:

  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Hoo boy. Ronon and Teal'c manage to take out an entire Wraith invasion force by themselves.
  • The Bus Came Back: Kavanagh returns for the first time since Season Two's "Critical Mass". Two years away from the Expedition and Pegasus hasn't made him any less of an jackass, though.
  • Diabolus ex Machina: The Wraith suddenly have an omnidirectional stunner device that can go through walls and was able to stun the entire base crew of the SGC. This weapon is never seen before or since, despite the fact that it would make short work of nearly any situation the Wraith are involved in. The only explanation is that it was a custom device made by the Wraith leader in this episode and it died with him.
    • In a later episode there is a similar, but hand-held device which effectively works the same way and knocks out the entire bridge crew of the Daedelus. Which makes it even stranger that these devices aren't more widespread.
  • "Die Hard" on an X: Looks like it's going that way, then subverted as Ronon and Teal'c, rather than sneaking around, simply kill everyone without much ado.
  • End of an Era: This episode marks Teal'c's final appearance in the TV franchise, ending an 11 year run for Christopher Judge (though he would later reprise the role for the Unleashed video game).
  • Failed a Spot Check: Despite all their security precautions (especially after what happened with Michael's Hive in "Allies") Todd still managed to hack into Rodney's systems while he was on Atlantis earlier in the Season — and all without Rodney even noticing or the security alerts being triggered).
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Ronon and Teal'c end up becoming this, after initial Teeth-Clenched Teamwork.
  • Idiot Ball: The SGC not installing irises on either of the Midway Station Stargates, since they were confident they could only be accessed through a proprietary program and not simply randomly dialed into from any regular gate. They never anticipated someone stealing the program.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Ronon does this to the last Wraith from behind with the sharp end of a pipe.
  • Lampshade Hanging:
Ronon: He was fed on by the Wraith. That's not a good way to go.
    Teal'c: Indeed.
Ronon: You say that a lot.
    Teal'c: Do I?
    Ronon: Yeah.
    Teal'c: I had not noticed.
    • And of course Teal'c has no idea how often he says "Indeed."
  • Meaningful Echo:
    Teal'c: Excellent timing.
    Ronon: Indeed.
  • Never My Fault: Rodney being Rodney, he initially refuses to believe Todd could've hacked his systems while he was on Atlantis earlier in the Season (or that he'd missed said hack). However, the seed of doubt is planted and once they get proof of Todd's indirect involvement, a pissed Rodney's forced to concede the Wraith got one over on him.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Well, calling Kavanagh a hero is stretching it. Regardless, Kavanagh's stupidity is directly responsible for the activation of Midway's self-destruct.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: After having been part of Atlantis since its construction back in early Season Three, the Midway Station is destroyed. While Earth can still reach Pegasus with BC-304s (and Atlantis can still dial Earth thanks to its ZPM), the intergalactic transit status quo is now back to what it was during Season Two. The Intergalactic Gate Bridge itself is at least left intact, making it a source of spare gates.
  • Pipe Pain: Ronon uses a piece of steam pipe to beat down one Wraith before using the sharp end to impale another.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Ronon and Teal'c
  • Retcon: Mckay's line in the "previously on" segment where he mentions that there is no need for the Midway gates to have irises never appeared in a previous episode. It was entirely made up for this episode specifically. In fact, in past episodes set on the Midway station there are computer read outs that depict graphics of the Stargates with irises built into them.
  • Required Spinoff Crossover: Teal'c goes to Atlantis (and teams up with his spinoff counterpart). This also makes him the last of the original SG-1 members to visit the Lost City (as Teal'c had been forced to remain behind back in the Milky Way during "The Pegasus Project").
  • Superman Stays Out of Gotham: Despite the SGC itself coming under siege, no other members of SG-1 appear to lend a hand. In-story, this could be justified by any number of explanations (ex. the team was off-world or they were also knocked out and were there albeit off-screen).
  • Tranquil Fury: Rodney upon realizing Todd did hack his systems earlier in the Season.
  • Trickster Mentor: Teal'c chooses this method to prepare Ronon for his IOA evaluation, deliberately antagonising him to make a point that losing his temper (or trying to kill the IOA) would not be a good start to the interview.
  • Wham Episode: The Midway Station is destroyed (though the Intergalactic Gate Bridge is at least left intact).
  • Where Does He Get All Those Wonderful Toys?: Teal'c's reaction to Ronon's Hand Cannon is to admit he wants one. Ronon tells him to get in line.
