Recap / Star Wars: The Clone Wars S4E16 "Friends and Enemies"

Go To

Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer.

A disguised Obi-Wan, Cad Bane, and Moralo Eval flee the Republic while pursued by Anakin and Ahsoka.

Tropes:

  • And This Is for...: When Anakin is trying to land a killing blow on "Rako Hardeen", he declares "This is for Obi-Wan."
  • Arson, Murder, and Admiration: Anakin is impressed by the Bith's money-making scheme (in that he sells ships with only enough fuel to get them to a fuelling station on Orondia that's owned by his brother).
  • Big Damn Heroes: Cad Bane is about to execute an unconscious Anakin when Ahsoka comes flying in, lightsabers blazing, to stand over his body in defense.
  • Call-Forward: Palpatine manipulates Anakin by preying on his fears that the Jedi Council don't trust him, just as he will in Revenge of the Sith.
  • The Cameo: A drunk Sy Snootles is seen exiting a bar on Nal Hutta.
  • Choke Holds: Obi-Wan subdues Anakin by choking him into unconsciousness, giving him enough time to whisper a warning that lets Anakin realize that he's disguised as his own killer.
  • Continuity Nod: The ship Obi-Wan buys is of the same design as Lando Calrissian's yacht, the Lady Luck, from Legends. The Lady Luck was reintroduced to canon in Last Shot, too.
  • Didn't Think This Through: As Yoda bitterly notes, the Jedi Council apparently never considered telling Anakin about how they were involved in faking Obi-Wan's death after it was safe to do so, even though they know how much Anakin is ruled by emotion compared to other Jedi.
  • Groin Attack: Anakin slams a knee between Obi-Wan's legs, which almost gives him enough time to retrieve his lightsaber and kill Obi-Wan before Cad Bane joins the fight.
  • Honest John's Dealership: The Bith owner of the used spaceship lot Obi-Wan gets two spaceships from only sells the ships with enough fuel to make it to his brother's fueling station on Orondia.
  • Interspecies Romance: Pablo, the Rodian owner of the pawn shop Obi-Wan, Bane, and Eval get new clothes from, has a Twi'lek girlfriend.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Anakin and Ahsoka weren't told the truth about Obi-Wan's "death" because their reactions needed to look genuine. Palpatine takes advantage of this to try tricking Anakin into killing "Rako Hardeen" in revenge.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Anakin and Ahsoka are kept out of the loop regarding Obi-Wan's faked death and undercover mission, which almost gets all three of them killed when the Chancellor overrules the Jedi Council and allows Anakin to pursue "Rako Hardeen" himself. To sell Obi-Wan's death, the Jedi needed Anakin's reaction to look natural, but could have told him the truth at any point after the event, as Yoda notes too late.
  • Properly Paranoid: Obi-Wan correctly guesses Cad Bane will ditch him, so plants a tracker on the ship whose purchase he just negotiated.
  • Right Hand Versus Left Hand: Invoked by Palpatine, who sends Anakin to Nal Hutta to deal with "Rako Hardeen" under the pretence that merely tracking the fugitives isn't enough, as though unaware of the Jedi Council's actual plan. Palpatine, of course, is perfectly aware that "Hardeen" is actually an undercover Obi-Wan and is deliberately interfering in the hope that one or both Jedi will be killed.
  • Shout-Out: When Cad Bane is picking out a new hat, the first one he picks up is Indiana Jones' fedora.
  • Tracking Device: Obi-Wan plants one on the first ship he buys because he expects Bane and Eval to betray him, and he's got a plan to make himself indispensable.
  • Wretched Hive: While it is to be expected from the Hutt homeworld, this episode makes it clear that Nal Hutta is a hub for criminal activity, between shady merchants, thugs willing to mug you, and people just trying to lay low. As Cad Bane put it, everyone in the town of Bilbousa is an outlaw.
