Recap / Star Wars: The Clone Wars S2E20 "Death Trap"

Go To

Who my father was matters less than my memory of him.

Boba Fett, seeking revenge against Jedi Master Mace Windu for the death of his father Jango, infiltrates the Jedi Cruiser Endurance disguised as a clone cadet. He plants an explosive just inside the door of Windu's cabin. By a fluke, Mace isn't the one that sets it off — he was about to enter his cabin when a clone trooper brings him word he's wanted on the bridge, and the unfortunate trooper falls victim to the trap when Mace asks him to put a data chip in his cabin.

The explosion causes damage to the ship's navigation systems. On top of that, the Jedi now know there's a saboteur on board the ship, and Mace and Anakin Skywalker start a systematic search of the Endurance from bow to stern. Boba, knowing that Mace didn't get killed in his booby trap, sneaks away and shoots up the engine room on the advice of Aurra Sing, who's serving as his Mission Control.

Due to the escalating damage to the ship, the Jedi order an evacuation. Admiral Kilian, however, insists on Going Down with the Ship, using those exact words. He intends to crash-land on nearby Vanqor. The Clone Youth Brigade files into two escape pods. When his pod launches, Boba subtly sabotages it, causing the communications to go offline and the pod to drift off-course.

Sergeant Crasher contacts the Jedi because he can't find the other pod with the rest of his cadets. Anakin and Mace, in their starfighters, set off in search. Meanwhile, the cadets in the wayward escape pod hear a ship docking. The door opens to reveal bounty hunters Aurra Sing and Bossk aboard the Slave I, here to pick up Boba. The cadets aboard the escape pod are shocked to learn that "Lucky", as they knew him, is an infiltrator. Aurra tells Boba to jettison the cadets into open space, but he instead chooses to safely release them in their pod. The Jedi find the missing pod shortly after Slave I departs.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Hero: Anakin's insistence on calling Mace to the bridge inadvertently saves him from getting killed by Boba's explosive laser tripwire, which kills the clone trooper whom he ordered to call Mace to the bridge instead.
  • Booby Trap: Boba plants an explosive triggered by a laser tripwire just inside the door of Mace's cabin.
  • Call-Back:
    • Mace Windu killed Jango Fett back in Attack of the Clones, which Boba witnessed.
    • Vanqor first appeared back in "Dooku Captured".
    • Boba is much better than the cadets at shooting objects in space, a skill first shown when he piloted his father's ship the Slave I in Attack of the Clones.
  • Conveniently Close Planet: Vanqor, again, in keeping with series tradition.
  • The Corrupter: Aurra is the one who's especially needling Boba into seeking revenge.
  • Death Glare: When Boba sees Mace Windu for the first time since Geonosis, he gives a very hateful stare.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Clone cadet Jax is rather disappointed in Boba when the latter is outed as an infiltrator.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Mace will be killed by Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith at the end of the duel in the Chancellor's office, so of course Boba isn't going to succeed with his assassination attempt.
  • Going Down with the Ship: Admiral Kilian is of the opinion that a captain should go down with their ship because it's "traditional". He plans to attempt a crash-landing on Vanqor.
  • Hero-Worshipper: The clone cadets are awed to meet famous Jedi Mace Windu and Anakin Skywalker, as well as meeting older clone troopers with battle experience.
  • The Infiltration: Boba goes undercover as a clone cadet to attempt to assassinate Mace Windu.
  • Not So Similar: One of the clone cadets at the end says Boba is nothing like them. Jax says he hopes he's the opposite, so that Boba will eventually realize he's wrong in his thinking.
  • One-Steve Limit: Boba's alias of "Lucky" was also the name of a clone Red Shirt in "Jedi Crash".
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: When Boba slips away from the Youth Brigade to head for Mace's quarters, he runs into two clone troopers and claims he's carrying an eyes-only communiqué there. One of the troopers correctly guesses that he's lying, but assumes that the "cadet" has gotten lost.
  • Saved by Canon: Mace appears in Revenge of the Sith, so of course he's not going to die in this episode.
  • Thrown Out the Airlock: At the end, Aurra orders Boba to jettison the three cadets into open space. Boba instead safely releases them in their pod.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Boba has the opportunity to kill a clone trooper in cold blood as the clone begs for his life, saying they're brothers. Despite Boba's assertion they're not, he can't pull the trigger, likely because the clone has his helmet off and therefore looks exactly like his father Jango. Instead, he stuns him.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Aurra Sing sees no problem with blowing an escape pod with three clone children into space.
  • You Killed My Father: This is Boba's entire motivation for going after Mace.
