Recap / Star vs. the Forces of Evil S3 E15 "Trial by Squire"

Go To

Star and Marco prepare for the Midnight Warrior Blowout Sale at Quest Buy.

Tropes:

  • All of Them: Leading off Marco's list, we have "Item: Snacks. Quantity: All of them."
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Higgs introduces her knight, Sir Stabby, it shows a dragon eating a lance. Then Stabby appears forcing his way out of the dragon's mouth.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Old Guy and Baby Man may look goofy, but they're just as ruthless during the Squire Blowout as Higgs.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Higgs acts nice, introducing Marco to her friends, but is a total jerk to him and Star throughout the episode. While she has understandable reasons for her resentment of Marco, the fact that she thinks behaving this way toward the heir to the throne is a good idea despite being a lowly squire herself is pretty baffling.
  • Blowing a Raspberry: When Higgs drives away after stealing Marco's Starter Horse, she does this.
  • Captain Obvious: When Old Guy is introduced as Old Guy, he says "I'm old!"
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Averted. The rival squires never get any comeuppance for their cheating except for Higgs when her knight, Sir Stabby, is impressed by Marco buying silly stuff making Higgs jealous.
  • Cuteness Proximity: When choosing the Starter Horses, Star wants one who apparently nods back to her and wears a bow.
  • Evil Is Petty: While not outright evil, the other squires are complete jerks toward Marco simply because he didn't have to work to become a squire.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": One of Higgs' companions is called "Old Guy". It may even be his real name. Another one is called "Baby Man".
  • Hope Spot: Marco sees a lone chest plate in a shelf and is ready to get it... then Baby Man slams his face into it.
  • Hunk: Sir Dashing of Muzzleton does a Wink "Ding!" and has Star gaping at him. Despite his square jaw, he has very feminine eyes.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Played With. Higgs tries to justify her petty behavior towards Marco by arguing she worked harder than him to earn her squire status. However, she also highly underestimates what Marco has gone through himself.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Marco has enough of the rival squires' cheating after the Dragon Attractant fiasco and starts cheating against them as well.
  • Long List: Marco's list of items to buy is bigger than both him and Star.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: Marco going on about his Long List.
Marco: Sorry, Star. But that's not on... the list! Booooooooooooooooom!
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Marco wants to know why Higgs has been acting like a jerk to him. Her response:
Higgs: Listen, wannabe, you think it's easy being a squire? All of my waking hours I'm weaving chain mail, sharpening swords. I'm always at my knight's beck and call. I've even learned how to polish armor in my sleep. But what did you do to earn this job? Oh, nothing. It was handed to you because you're the princess' boyfriend.
  • Serious Business: The rival squires take the blowout as a serious competition. Marco too gets into it and Star tries to get him to relax.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Considering the whole Kingdom already thinks it, Higgs thinks Marco is Star's boyfriend. He tells her he isn't.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Two of the gnomes that Star and Marco buy at the end resemble Schmebulock and Jeff from Gravity Falls.
    • Star and Marco's line "Yes. Yes, we did." is a reference to Phineas and Ferb.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Higgs thinks Marco is a newbie who was made squire because of his close relationship with the princess. Little does she know he battled many monsters at her side and fought against the Lint Catcher.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Not only nobody bats an eye at the dragon who almost ate Sir Stabby, but also the clerk treats a dragon attack in one isle as a minor inconvenience. In fact, it seems to be a regular occurrence.
Quest Buy clerk: Apparently, we've got dragons on aisle 14.2... again.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: After Marco gets the Armor Wax, Star scolds him for badly hurting Higgs in the process.
  • Wink "Ding!": Done by Sir Dashing of Muzzleton, Old Guy's knight. It display his "hot guy" status.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Higgs pretends to be badly hurt by Marco tripping her. Star falls for it but Marco doesn't buy it. When she hands Higgs the wax, she instantly goes back to normal.
Higgs: Thanks for the wax, losers!

Trial by Squire

Squire Higgs has been acting extremely competitive to Marco because she thinks she has done much more than him to live up to her title, and she believes the squire position was simply given to Marco because Princess Star likes him.

How well does it match the trope?
