Recap / Star vs. the Forces of Evil S2 E36 "Heinous"

Go To

Ms. Heinous shows up at the Diaz house and Marco must make amends for all the terrible things he has done.

Tropes:

  • Adults Are Useless: The Diazes fulfill this role to a tee in this episode. They fail to recognize that Heinous is Obviously Evil (or at least deranged) and think Star and Marco are the aggressors of this situation and in general outside of their home. Part of this is driven by their desire to get the situation over with so they can host a dinner with their cool neighbors.
  • Backhanded Apology: Marco's "apology video" is dripping with sarcasm and Suspiciously Specific Denials, making it clear that he doesn't mean a word of it. He gets away with it because Heinous is too unhinged at this point to catch on.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Zig-zagged; Heinous forces Marco to make a video retracting and condemning his insurrection at St. Olga's. However, she is too unstable to realize Marco's overwhelmingly sarcastic tone. Additionally, her initial demands for Marco's punishment were killing him to display his skeleton as a trophy/wear his spine as a belt, which were negotiated down to said apology video. Still, though, she gets away with Marco's parents remaining oblivious to her true colors.
  • Black-and-Gray Morality: Ms. Heinous, in her own demented way, points out that Marco's actions have ruined St. Olga's and the delinquent princesses who were sent there to learn responsibility and restraint are now free to act as wild as they please. However, Marco rightfully points out that Heinous' idea of teaching them responsibility was to forcefully strip away their individuality by brainwashing them.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • When Heinous asks how her hair looks, Gemini claims she looks like she just came from the salon. Heinous knows this is nonsense, but appreciates the lie.
    • When Marco tells his parents that Heinous strapped him to a chair and tried to brainwash him, Heinous claims that to be a "gross exaggeration".
  • Brick Joke: The last few times Marco used his "Emergency Cash Stash" (in "Goblin Dogs", "Pizza Thing", and "The Bounce Lounge"), he always seemed to have exactly $650 on him. This episode reveals that Marco gets a monthly $650 royalty check for the use of his "Princess Marco" image on merchandise.
  • Dead Guy on Display: Heinous wants to put Marco's skeleton on display in front of the school as a message to the rebellious princesses.
  • Dragged into Drag: Marco is forced to put on his "princess" outfit for an embarrassing retraction video. Afterward, when the family has a game night, he decides to keep the dress on.
  • Flying Car: Heinous' sedan can fly.
  • From a Single Cell: Rasticore's surviving arm will eventually regenerate a new body for him.
  • Gilligan Cut: Marco swears he'll do anything to get rid of Ms. Heinous. Cut to him in a dress holding a sign reading "It IS Criminal to be an Individual", lamenting his choice of words.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Marco's ideals did promote individuality to the students at St. Olga's, but it led to them becoming completely uncontrollable, resulting in Heinous's overthrow and causing the school to fall apart. Marco doesn't see anything wrong with this, justifying that he did what he had to do because her idea of rehabilitation was brainwashing.
  • Healing Factor: After being vaporized by the Quest Buy gift card, Rasticore's surviving hand is slowly regrowing the rest of his body.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Marco's parents go about assuming Miss Heinous is a legit authority figure whom Marco has defied, no matter how severe the punishment she wants to mete out to him.
  • Idiot Ball /Jerkass Ball: Marco's parents caught both in this episode, big time! This is the only episode in which they're dumb and Jerkass at all.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Heinous tells the Diazes to keep a better eye on what their son is doing, something they do take to heart after realizing Marco and Star have clearly gotten up to quite a lot while they weren't looking. While the Diazes don't mind Marco's and Star's antics inside their house, it's what happens outside without their knowledge that raised a red flag.
  • Loophole Abuse: Marco was told to apologize; there's nothing saying he can't be sarcastic about it.
  • Make an Example of Them: Heinous wants to break the rebellious princesses by putting Marco's skeleton on display to make an example of those who defy authority. She settles for an apology video.
  • The Merch: In-Universe. There's merchandise of "Princess Marco" and Marco himself is not only completely aware of it but also receives royalties for the use of his image.
  • Meaningless Villain Victory: While Heinous managed to "punish" Marco by getting him to record a video denouncing his actions, it has done nothing to change her current situation; she still has no money and lives in her car. Marco also points out that his obviously forced speech will probably do little to curb the rebel princesses' actions.
  • Never My Fault: Heinous refuses to take responsibility for her crimes and wants to punish Marco for inspiring a revolution to put an end to them.
  • Noodle Incident: When Star and Marco first appear, Marco expresses hope that Star finally learned parking meters aren't filled with candy.
  • Not Quite Dead: Apparently Rasticore is still alive, and regenerating slowly.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: This is the first time the Diazes are angry and strict towards Marco and Star, as they thought they were upsetting their houseguests Heinous and Gemini who had done nothing wrong. Plus, they take Miss Heinous' advice to heart to keep an assertive eye on Star's and Marco's inter-dimensional adventures.
  • Playing the Victim Card: Heinous presents herself to Marco's parents as an innocent victim of Marco's actions, claiming to have done no wrong herself.
  • Police Are Useless: A police officer shows up to investigate the disturbance... and reports of a double-parked car. But since Heinous' car isn't touching the ground (it's literally "double parked", as in parked on top of another car), there's technically nothing he can do.
  • Punk in the Trunk: Gemini is forced to sleep in the trunk.
  • Sacred Hospitality: Marco's parents stop Marco and Star from attacking Heinous and her assistant, because they willingly invited them into their home. Despite the fact that Heinous chainsawed the front door first.
  • Sanity Slippage: Ms. Heinous was never all there to begin with, but her mind has really cracked after losing her school. She can't recognize that Marco is a boy, she treats Rasticore's arm like it's her baby and acts as if he's still effective at killing, and she is unable to recognize that Marco's "apology" is filled with sarcasm and obvious hints that he's being forced to give it.
  • Sarcasm Mode: Marco's "apology", to the point that he more or less admits Heinous is forcing him to do it. Heinous is completely oblivious.
  • Sequel Hook: Despite getting what she wanted, Heinous ends the episode by planning to annihilate Marco and Star so the multiverse will "quiver" before her, wiping off the makeup hiding her cheek symbols as she does.
  • Skewed Priorities: Mr. and Mrs. Diaz spend most of the episode worried about having to cancel dinner with the neighbors, almost completely ignoring Heinous's threats to kill their son.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Marco wants the princesses to know he's definitely not apologizing just because Ms. Heinous is threatening him and his family.
  • Twitchy Eye: Miss Heinous has a twitch in her eye while recording Marco's apology video, which helps to show she's too far over the edge to pick up on Marco's sarcasm.
  • You Said You Would Let Them Go: Done in spirit at least. Heinous still intends to get revenge on Marco and Star despite getting what she wanted out of them. Marco did make use of liberal amounts of sarcasm to get away with Loophole Abuse but Heinous herself didn't realize that, meaning she plays the trope straight.
