Star thinks fortune cookies really can predict the future, and becomes so obsessed with them that she won't make a decision without consulting one. Meanwhile, Ludo hires a new minion, Toffee, who is much more intelligent and competent than his usual ones.

Tropes:

  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The episode starts with Star and Marco trouncing Ludo's minions per the norm. The battle is so one-sided that the two teens start making bets on whether or not certain attacks will work.
  • Cute Monster Girl: The genderflipped Ludo from the henchman auditions.
  • Dartboard of Hate: Ludo has a crude figurine of Star which he uses as a pencil holder, having stabbed two through her torso.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Toffee clearly has some ulterior motives to his new position.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Toffee introduces himself to Ludo by offering the latter a glass of swamp water. He then asks Ludo if he drinks from the bottle. Ludo replies only "On days like this".
  • Fish out of Water: Star still has some trouble accepting mundane explanations for Earth phenomena. In addition to believing that fortune cookies have real predictions, she thinks snow globes are made by dark wizards.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: The calm and collected "evil efficiency expert" Toffee is very much in contrast to his new employer.
  • I've Heard of That — What Is It?: Star sounds enthusiastic at the idea of Chinese food... before admitting she has no idea what that is.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Toffee's introduction marks a dark turn for the show, as his character and what he has planned is depicted as being much more serious than what's come thus far.
  • Near-Villain Victory: The forces of evil came very close to taking the wand after they slipped in a fortune cookie telling Star not to fight.
  • Perpetual Smiler: The Chinese restaurant worker.
  • The Power of Love: The villains' plan involves giving Star a fortune cookie that states "Love is always the answer", which gets her to try and hug her enemies rather than pummel them. It works in that they stop fighting her, but it also leaves her wand open for Ludo to grab. Then it fails because the monster Star is hugging decides to spill the beans about the plan.
  • Real After All: After Star is finally convinced fortune cookies are not magical, she opens one last one that reads, "A GREAT EVIL HAS BEEN UNLEASHED". While she and Marco laugh it off, the episode ends with Toffee sinisterly watching the kingdom of Mewni as he reassures his boss that they will succeed.
  • Terrible Interviewees Montage: The potential minions Ludo interviews before getting to Toffee.
  • Twitchy Eye: Ludo gets an epic case of eye twitch after Star and Marco soundly defeated his monsters, and he's humiliatingly stuck under one.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: The fortune cookie ""A great evil has been unleashed" thought it is hinted that it's about Toffee.
  • Wham Line: A fortune cookie warning says "A Great Evil Has Been Unleashed". Star and Marco laugh it off but Toffee is seen sinisterly watching the kingdom of Mewni before making a comment about Ludo "not being the first monster to fall victim to their magic".
