Recap / Squirrel Boy S 1 E 11 The Trojan Rabbit The Endangered Species Twist

Go To

Air date: November 3, 2006

"The Trojan Rabbit": Rodney runs away from home when Archie, the "perfect pet" arrives for Andy, but Archie may not be the ideal pet Andy had in mind.

"The Endangered Species Twist": Rodney discovers that he's an "endangered species", and forces Mr. Johnson, Andy, and Mrs. J to cater to his "every whim".

"The Trojan Rabbit" contains examples of:

  • Big Blackout: Rodney's failed attempts to rewire Mr. J's computer cause not only the Johnson house's power to go out, but the whole city's as well. Thankfully, Mr. J has an emergency switch installed to return the power.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Archie first appears as a sweet and adorable bunny when introducing himself to the Johnsons, but it turns out he's an Ax-Crazy psychopath with plans of killing Rodney, also having tied Andy and his parents in a rope trap.
  • Jerkass Ball: Arguably. The Johnsons pretty much ignore Rodney for Archie, and even give away his bed without telling him. No wonder Rodney felt unwanted.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Mr. J entraps Archie in a cage and he is taken away by Animal Control at the end. Also, somewhat Mr. J himself, since he was the one who brought Archie in the first place.
  • We Will Meet Again: When being captured and incarcerated by Animal Control, Archie warns Rodney that he'll be back sooner or later.
Archie: I'll be back, Rodney! So sleep well, Rodney. And don't close your eyes!

"The Endangered Species Twist" contains examples of:

  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Ranger Stu appears behind a black screen at the end and tells the audience not to litter while also reminding them that he's trapped in their home (in their TV screen).
  • Big Eater: Rodney eats a lot of food while being spoiled rotten by Andy, Mr. J, and Mrs. J, creating a messy floor of doughnuts.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Rodney’s decision to tear up Leon’s certificate ends up being this when the letter really was his after all, and tearing it up just rendered his status as protected null and void (even though it doesn’t work like that in real life, it’s still Played for Laughs).
  • Idiot Ball: Andy is usually Rodney's voice of reason, but he holds it pretty good in this episode. First, he joins Rodney in wasting time outside concentrating hard to get the mailman to arrive, which turns out to have been completely pointless as the mailman tells them he comes everyday and thus they don't need to do that. Then, he doesn't care that Rodney is considered an endangered species. And finally, he gives into Rodney's demands to cater to his every whim while spoiling him rotten.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Rodney is trapped in an art farm in Mr. J's office for the latter's entertainment at the end.
  • Last One's Ploy: Rodney receives a certificate that proves his status as an endangered species and abuses that status to be spoiled rotten. Mr. J is unable to retaliate or refuse Rodney’s demands without getting into trouble with Ranger Stu. It’s subverted when it looks like the letter was actually meant for Leon, and the latter never abuses his status. It’s double subverted when the letter turns out to be Rodney’s after all, but since he tore up the certificate, he loses his status as a protected animal.
  • Running Gag: Ranger Stu randomly appearing in the Johnsons' house, startling Mr. J, and then at the end behind the black screen, Breaking the Fourth Wall.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: While usually being the show's quintessential Butt-Monkey, Mr. J comes out on top at the end by getting to enjoy seeing Rodney trapped in his office ant farm.
  • Too Dumb to Fool: Downplayed. Leon sees through Rodney’s Paper-Thin Disguise, but he still gives him the certificate without caring about what he does with it.
