Original air date: 12/29/1999

Cartman and Kenny mistake a colon infection for their menstrual cycles, prompting Kyle to lie about "getting his period" and Stan to ingest hormone pills so he will not feel left out. Meanwhile, Jesus plans a New Year's party and is worried God will not be there.

Tropes:

  • Ass Shove: Because the boys are so seriously lacking in basic biology that they think they can get periods, Kenny shoves a tampon up his butt to absorb the flow. This winds up killing him when he forgets to take it out.
  • The Cameo: A Jakovasaur can be seen in the news in France.
  • Comically Missing the Point: The hormones Mephesto gives Stan are labelled "Take one". He takes one out of the jar and swallows the rest, triggering multiple side effects.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Cartman, Kenny and Kyle gather for their "period meeting" in Cartman's clubhouse which he and Kenny built-in "Clubhouses".
    • Jesus has a picture of himself and Santa performing their duet from the previous episode.
    • Chinese dodgeballers can be seen in the news in China.
  • Daddy Didn't Show: God doesn't show up to Jesus' New Year's Eve party. However, it was to teach him that he needs to be able to depend on himself and not ask Him for help every time there's a problem. When Jesus realizes this, God shows up.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Butters' father can be seen in the crowd outside of Jesus' house.
  • Entitled Bastard:
    • The Aesop of the episode involves Stan and Jesus believing that praying to God constantly should get answers. While Jesus eventually realizes that is not how life works, Stan is still upset and wastes the town's one question asking why God wouldn't give him his period.
    • The townspeople feel entitled by the sense of importance about the turn of the millennium, demanding Jesus show them God. When God doesn't turn up at the concert, despite Jesus not even promising it, the townspeople throw a tantrum about being misled and prepare to crucify Jesus a second time.
  • God: He appears in this episode, and He's depicted as...quite a bit different than most portrayals of Him.
  • I Have This Friend: Stan is anxious to get his period because his friends already have. He tells Chef that he has this friend who is upset because everyone already got their period. When Chef asks if he means his sister Shelly or his girlfriend Wendy, Stan says the identity of the person is irrelevant. He then talks to Dr. Mephesto about puberty and asks what happens if someone never went through it. Mephesto wants to know who never went through puberty, so Stan tells him his dad. He explains that's why he's there as his dad is too embarrassed to show up; Dr. Mephesto says he can't blame him.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: It almost seem subverted when the town's almost murderous spoiled tantrum over God not showing is met with God actually showing. Only for Stan to then waste their one question to God on something ridiculous. In turn the townspeople beat up Stan offscreen for his selfishness.
  • New Year Has Come: Jesus Christ and the entire town await the arrival of God on New Year's Eve 1999, as a way of making his dad proud of him. Jesus invites everyone to spend New Year's Eve in Las Vegas, meanwhile Cartman and the other boys are convinced that they just got their periods which later turns out to be a colon infection. God does finally arrive and allows the townspeople to ask one question, which is asked by Stan who asks why he's the only one who isn't getting his period. God points out to Stan that biological males can't have periods, only females can.
  • Potty Failure: Rod Stewart can't hold it in whenever he has to go.
  • Recycled Animation: As a way of saving time and money, frames from "Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics" are used; for instance, the scan of the colon infection is the x-ray scan from Mr. Hankey's intro song.
  • Shout-Out: A very obvious one to Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. mainly with the "period" plot (though the period in question is actually a colon infection) but also traces of Jesus questioning his relationship with God similar to the titular Margaret feeling trapped with her religious pressures.
    • For the period plot, Stan is basically Margaret (hasn't gotten a period and is the center of the plot), Kenny is Janie (the nice quiet one), Kyle is Gretchen but with traces of Nancy (a friend who is faking his "period" to be included), and Cartman is Nancy without faking his "period" (a bad friend who patronizes anyone different than he is).
  • Take That!: Rod Stewart is depicted as so old and decrepit that he can barely talk above a mumble, it sounds like he's moaning in pain whenever he tries to sing, and he can't stop pooping himself.
    • Someone speculates that boys have started sticking tampons up their asses because they saw the Backstreet Boys do it.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Kenny dies as a result of shoving a tampon up his ass because of his colon infection near the end of the episode.
  • Title Drop: Done by Jesus, asking God for advice.
  • Truth in Television: Stan takes a bunch of hormones obtained from Dr. Mephesto because he's insecure about not having hit puberty yet. He takes all the pills at once and wakes up the next morning with facial hair, a deeper voice...and titties. One of the side effects from excessive amounts of synthetic testosterone is gynecomastia, the development of breast tissue on males caused by the body producing excess estrogen to maintain homeostasis. It's commonly developed by bodybuilders due to their excessive steroid use.
