Recap / South Park S15 E5 "Crack Baby Athletic Association"

Go To

Original air date: 5/25/2011

Kyle tries to help crack babies in need and finds that Cartman, Clyde and Craig have started a basketball league for them. He has a battle over his conscience when Cartman asks him to join the management.

Examples:

  • Became Their Own Antithesis: During one of Kyle's attempts to justify the association's existence, Stan calls him out for sounding like Cartman. Kyle tries to refute this only to sound just like him.
Kyle: Dude, the thing is, we're not the ones that made them crack babies. That's their mom's goddamn fault!
Stan: Yeah, I'm sure that's what Cartman would say too.
Kyle: I do not sound like Cartman, Goddammit! (covers his mouth in horror)
  • Distinction Without a Difference:
Cartman: I don't make the rules, ma'am, I just think them up and write them down.
  • Get Out!: Mr. Peters, an Expy of Peter Moore of Electronic Arts, tells the boys to leave his office after screwing them over.
Mr. Peters: Well, boys, this has been real educational and all, but now, let's part with that ol' EA Sports sayin': "Get the fuck outta my building!"
  • Not So Above It All: Kyle is initially outraged when he finds out what Cartman is doing, but Cartman is able to manipulate him into joining by telling him how much money they've made.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Instead of resorting to his usual threats an bullying, Cartman just gives Kyle a high-paying job. And when Kyle suggests giving the crack babies an orphanage, Cartman actually goes along with it because it would be good PR.
  • Real After All: Late in the episode, Clyde and Craig learn that the guitarist Slash does not actually exist and that he's a fictional character akin to Santa Claus, with parents dressing up as Slash to keep up the ruse. At the end, however, Kyle and Stan find that the orphanage the former planned to fund is being built, with the two of them finding Slash's signature hat and guitar in the corner.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Cartman dresses up and acts as a 19th-century plantation owner to find out how the University of Colorado-Boulder avoids compensating its student athletes.
  • Skewed Priorities: After EA screws the association out of the profits from the deal and the rights to their company, they, except for Kyle, are more concerned that Slash is not real and that their parents lied to them.
  • Take That!: The entire episode mocks the NCAA for making billions of dollars off college athletes and only compensating them through free college tuition and housing, which is a pittance compared to what a paid salary would be.
