Recap / Sonic Boom S 2 E 43 Chain Letter

Go To

The forty-third episode of the second season of Sonic Boom.

When Dr. Eggman discovers that he has no friends on social media, he creates Scrambler, his own social media network.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Agony of the Feet: Eggman helps Redd Heron move his boxes into his new home in exchange for the latter being his third FriendSpace friend, only to find out that the latter's computer is in one of the boxes and won't have internet hooked up for a few weeks at the least. Eggman drops Redd's boxes on Redd's foot upon hearing this.
  • Black Comedy: Dave repeatedly hits the Old Monkey with his car. There's no blood and the monkey doesn't get harmed, but still.
  • Bland-Name Product: The social media networks in this episode include FriendSpace, Snarkchat, and Scrambler.
  • Chain Letter: Both the title and premise of this episode. Eggman gets one from FriendSpace in his email account and is advised to forward it to three friends or be cursed with bad luck forever.
  • Discredited Meme: An In-Universe example;
Sonic: Dude, this meme is like five years old!
  • Helping Granny Cross the Street: In an attempt to get the Old Monkey to be his third friend on FriendSpace, Eggman helps him cross the street. When Eggman asks the Old Monkey to send him a friend request on FriendSpace, the Old Monkey gets confused and Eggman leaves him in the middle of the road, where he gets run over by Dave's car.
  • The Internet Is for Cats:
    • This line from Sonic:
    Sonic: Another cat video?
    • Later...
Amy (laughing) A cat with a bag on its head?
  • Only Useful as Toilet Paper: A variant; when Sonic complains to Tails, Knuckles, and Amy about Eggman messaging him non-stop, Tails tells Sonic to ignore him, the way Meh Burger ignores their customer complaint forms. Dave tells Tails that he isn't ignoring the complaint forms, but rather using them as a substitute if they run out of napkins. After Sonic squeezes his drink when Eggman messages him for the umpteenth time, Dave tells him that he'll need a two-ply to clean it up, and offers him many complaint forms from a single customer.
  • Phone A Holic Teenager: The Rabbit Girl that Eggman tries to get to be his third FriendSpace friend is constantly on her phone.
  • Shout-Out: Sonic plays a game of soccer with his friends. At one point, when he is about to kick the soccer ball, Dr. Eggman snatches it from him the way Lucy does to Charlie Brown in ''Peanuts, causing the hedgehog to fall on his back and say "Good grief!".
  • Start My Own: After Sonic bans Eggman's friend request, Eggman decides to start his own social media network called Scrambler.
  • Take That!: This episode pretty much satires social media, such as Eggman repeatedly sending messages to Sonic, a jab at The Internet Is for Cats, and a scene of almost everyone looking down at their cell phones.
