Not quite "robots in disguise", you two, but we'll give you an "A" for effort.

The story arc opens on Team Sonic performing a charitable act in the Village Center: washing cars to raise money for a new daycare center (because the old one is nothing more than a rusted cage lined with barbed wire). However, they're interrupted when Eggman flies onto the scene in the Eggmobile, angrily accusing them of stealing from his change cup. Sonic is quick to point out that this isn't the case, but what both parties don't know is that a mysterious ship is falling from the sky, leaving a trail of smoke. As Eggman explains what he would likely have done with that change, the ship crashes in the distance and Sonic notices, attempting to inform his archenemy of it. Eggman, too wrapped up in the moment, sees this as Sonic trying to change the subject; not pleased at this, he orders his robots to attack, forcing Team Sonic into battle mode.

At the crash site, two robots emerge from the wreckage— a tall and strong one named Mighton, and a short and wiry one named Bolts— both undamaged from the crash (aside from Bolts' arm momentarily detaching). The two hear the sounds of battle in the distance and run into the Village Center, hiding behind bushes. They witness yet another battle between Team Sonic and Eggman and his robots, and Team Sonic is once again wiping the floor with Eggman's metallic minions. Mighton is incensed, believing Team Sonic is destroying their robot brethren, but Bolts urges him not to be hasty, as they don't have all the facts. Unfortunately for our heroes, his advice is immediately thrown out the window when Sonic expresses that he loves smashing up Eggman's robots. With that, Mighton and Bolts join the fight, unable to let this apparent injustice against robotkind continue. Sonic assumes they're Eggman's latest creations, and Eggman plays along and thinks up poor names for them.

Team Sonic is forced to square off with Eggman's usual and these strange newcomers, but soon enough the fight is wrapped up (literally) when Bolts extends his arm and wraps it around them before detaching it from his body and growing a new one. Eggman celebrates, claiming this as a rare victory for himself, and prompts Mighton and Bolts to leave with him before his foes find a way to turn this around on him. As they exit, Sonic manages to free himself and his teammates from Bolts' discarded arm, which Tails looks over. He deduces that these robots are far too advanced for Eggman to craft. Team Sonic's resident technophobe Sticks chimes in about this development, in spite of her friends' unenthused reactions; she's taken this as a sign that the robo-apocalypse she's been blabbing about is no longer nigh— it's now, and they're all liable to get destroyed. Ever the voice of reason to Sticks' insanity, Tails suggests they not assume the worst and investigate their new robotic attackers further, and while Sticks agrees to this, she's not willing to let go of her robo-apocalypse theory just yet.

Meanwhile, Eggman has taken Mighton and Bolts to his lair, explaining that Team Sonic is a bunch of ne'er-do-wells that are always menacing him when it's really the other way around; to illustrate, he mentions the change cup incident that spurred him to attack them earlier... which he realizes wasn't Team Sonic's doing, but his own, rendering his vengeance moot. Moving on from that SNAFU, Eggman continues to explain that Team Sonic is always wrecking his robots— key word, "his", because Mighton notices that terming and doesn't seem happy over it. Eggman hastily excuses it as the robots being his children and changes the subject to where the two robot outsiders come from. They explain they originate from a city in the clouds, populated with sentient robots that treat each other with respect. The name of this wondrous place? Morristown. No, really. Orbot and Cubot pick up on this plain name and suggest better names; Bolts is impressed and wishes they were there when they were deciding. Eggman realizes the city has no overlord and decides the place would be better suited under his thumb. He doesn't let Mighton and Bolts know about this, of course.

Elsewhere, Team Sonic is walking through the forest towards the crash site of Mighton and Bolts' ship, and they're discussing what to do about them. Amy wants everyone to settle things peacefully, and Sticks believes that's a good idea... because they won't expect it when she clobbers 'em with bricks. The group arrives at the ship, and Sonic and Tails enter to take a look around. Tails scans the ship for details and finds that the ship is literally out of this world, having gleaned from the GPS that their new potential foes came somewhere from the sky. Sticks, having heard this, now believes them to be both robots and aliens, which only makes her look forward more to beating them down.

Back in Eggman's lair, Eggman proposes a toast to his new allies and orders Orbot and Cubot to get refreshments. When they return with apple juice instead of apple cider, Eggman physically and verbally abuses them as usual. Mighton and Bolts definitely notice this and, now aware of Eggman's true colors, label him a foe to robotkind and turn to leave. Eggman tries to convince them that that's just their dynamic, but only winds up proving their point more. Bolts, in an act of kindness, tells the abused minions that they're free to leave with them to Morristown. The two are clearly overjoyed at the thought of leaving Eggman's cruelty behind, but the heartwarming moment is quickly interrupted when Eggman activates magnets in the ceiling, grabbing Mighton and Bolts and keeping them in place. Mighton ensures their kidnapper that he'll never get away with this, and Eggman defiantly asks who's gonna stop him.

In Tails' Workshop, Team Sonic (AKA, the group that's gonna stop Eggman) has gathered their evidence and are attempting to figure out for sure whether or not Mighton and Bolts are really evil, and of course, Sticks is still convinced they are. But their ruling is interrupted when Orbot and Cubot come a-knockin', Amy immediately certain the two have likely shown up to rat on Eggman's plot like they always do. They inform the team that Mighton and Bolts are being held captive at Eggman's and request they go there and save them. Knuckles unenthusiastically asks why they should be trusted, but Tails just wants to skip the game of 20 Questions and meet the people who built the ship. The team has no choice but to leave for Eggman's lair.

Speaking of Eggman's lair, Eggman still has Mighton and Bolts trapped there and demands the location of Morristown from them, but Mighton says they'll never tell him where it is. Eggman is about to electrocute the info out of them when Team Sonic performs their usual entrance of knocking down Eggman's front door (and tiring of this entrance, Eggman considers getting them their own key). Once again, the evil scientist orders his Badniks into action, and Team Sonic fights both them and the lair's defenses, all while Orbot and Cubot return and Orbot fakes surprise that Team Sonic broke in (but Cubot nearly spills the beans, being too stupid to realize). Tails easily frees Mighton and Bolts by turning off the magnets through one of Eggman's consoles, thanks to the doctor's weak password protection. Eggman flees in fear from his former prisoners and hides behind Fire Bot, who is quickly disposed of along with his remaining robots. Bolts then turns Eggman's magnets against him, attracting his wrist controller and zapping him as he threatened to do. The others leave, and Bolts once again extends an invite to Orbot and Cubot to come to Morristown, but they refuse it because, as Orbot explains, they're needed at the lair to tend to the injured Eggman.

Back at Tails' Workshop, Tails and Bolts have teamed up to fix the ship, which Tails has noted is overloaded with malware (more so than an email from Old Monkey). Mighton apologizes to Sonic for not believing at first that Team Sonic was on their side all along. He tells Bolts to start up the ship so they can return to Morristown, and once again, they're bombarded with suggestions for a better name; Bolts is impressed again and asks what their town is named. Knuckles tells him that it used to be Unnamed Village, but they recently changed it to Hedgehog Village. Bolts is no longer impressed. Before they leave, Mighton expresses that he's glad they and Team Sonic could make peace... and on cue, Sticks prepares to whack him from behind with a brick. Fortunately for robot-organic relations, Sonic silently calls her off, and she drops the brick, whistling. Mighton and Bolts take off for Morristown; most of Team Sonic waves them goodbye, but Sticks instead grunts in annoyance, not happy she had to let the robots get away without exacting (what she feels is) justice.

Now, usually, this would be the point in time where most of Team Sonic's adventures would end. But this isn't business as usual; that "Part One" in the title of the episode isn't just for show, people.

Soon after Mighton and Bolts leave, the heroes start hearing odd noises; they're not alone. Solid red eyes pop up in the bushes around them— hostiles, no doubt— but refusing to go down without a fight, they get into battle stances, ready to deal with these new camouflaged threats. The mysterious ambushers fire a barrage of lasers at them, and for a good few seconds, the gang narrowly manages to dodge the onslaught... but their luck doesn't last, as Tails is suddenly blasted out of the air by a direct hit. Concerned for their injured teammate, his friends are quick to surround him as they scream his name in shock; the episode fades to black here on this dramatic turn (and Knuckles, not being fond of cliffhanger endings, hates that). Team Sonic probably didn't expect any of this to happen when they got up in the morning, but what they have yet to realize is that this is only the prelude to a particularly... eventful day.

To be continued...

This episode contains examples of:

  • Big Damn Heroes: Eggman has captured Mighton and Bolts in order to get the location of Morristown from them. He's about to zap the information out of the two with several volts of electricity... and then, just in time, the door buckles, falling forward to reveal Team Sonic. The five quickly trash Eggman's Badniks and free Mighton and Bolts so they can get payback on their kidnapper.
  • Brick Joke: And one containing an actual brick, to boot. Midway through the episode, Sticks plots to hit Mighton and Bolts with bricks once they think they've made peace with Team Sonic, and sure enough, near the end of the episode, Mighton and Bolts make peace with Team Sonic... and Sticks pops up from behind Mighton, ready to hit him with a brick. Thankfully, Sonic stops this from happening.
  • Cliffhanger: Because of the show's format, Knuckles lampshades this for parts 1 to 3.
  • Continuity Nod: Knuckles says that the village's name used to be Unnamed Village until recently when it was changed to Hedgehog Village, referencing the ending of "Unnamed Episode" in which Sticks renamed the village after Amy for her loyalty.
  • Hit Stop: Time slows down briefly at the exact moment Tails is hit by a laser.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Eggman traps Mighton and Bolts with magnets in the ceiling to extract the location of Morristown from them, threatening to zap them just before Team Sonic arrives. Once the two are freed, Bolts turns the magnets on again to attract Eggman's wrist controller, then electrocutes him with his own trap.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Mighton and Bolts, both good-willed protectors of robotkind, attack Team Sonic when they first meet, believing the heroes to be remorseless robot wreckers when they come across another session of them destroying Eggman's Badniks without a second thought; they have no idea that the Badniks aren't exactly innocent. Eggman attempts to use this to his advantage by convincing them that Team Sonic are the troublemakers and not him, but soon enough, they see his real nature when Eggman abuses Orbot and Cubot as usual, then captures his robotic visitors and demands the location of Morristown from them. After Team Sonic rescues them, they're firmly convinced that the quintet are the real good guys.
  • Mythology Gag: When Mighton and Bolts say their floating city is called Morristown, Cubot asks why they didn't call it "Sky Sanctuary".
  • Say My Name: The rest of Team Sonic screams a worried "TAILS!" when the fox is downed by a laser at the end of the episode.
  • Story Arc: The "Robots from the Sky" episodes mark the first instance of a multi-episode plotline in the Sonic Boom TV series. This is part one of four.
