Recap / Sonic Boom S 1 E 6 Fortress Of Squalitude

Go To

Deep in his island fortress, Dr. Eggman is flipping through his day's mail, tossing most of it away as junk mail and feeding it to Cubot to be shredded. However one letter catches his eye. Cubot guesses that it's robotic women who will love them for their minds and aren't into looks or money but Eggman corrects him, revealing his lair has been chosen for coverage by Modern Lair Magazine. In anticipation of the upcoming "Island Fortress" issue, a photographer's assistant would be visiting Eggman's lair the following day to do a site inspection. So Eggman and his robots spend the day cleaning up the lair to make it presentable for the magazine.

Unfortunately for Eggman, the photographer's assistant is extremely underwhelmed by the lair and says it's terribly out of touch. Eggman begs the assistant for an opportunity to redesign the lair to meet the assistant's standards and is granted a week to do so. Eggman says he'll need to call in someone with a real knack for color and shape. With no one in the lair meeting his standards (evidenced by Cubot's inability to fit a purple square block through an x-shaped hole colored blue), Eggman decides he'll have to look elsewhere for help.

Meanwhile, Amy Rose is trying to prepare a classy outdoor lunch on the beach for her friends but is getting no real help from any of them. She designs an elegant table spread but Sticks dug a trench and filled it with broken glass instead of rose petals, Sonic is napping instead of preparing fruit drinks, Tails attempts to spice up the calm mood music by replacing it with loud techno, and Knuckles is using the pheasants he was supposed to be grilling as hand puppets. Amy expresses her frustration to Sticks and gets an agreement from an unlikely source: Dr. Eggman, who was standing behind her. Eggman compliments her table spread but Sticks immediately goes into battle mode and the others gather around her, ready to confront the doctor.

However Eggman had only come to make a proposition: he invites Amy to come and redesign his lair for the magazine article. Sonic, Knuckles, Sticks, and Tails all scoff at him but surprisingly Amy is honored by the request, saying she'll take her skills somewhere that they'll be appreciated. Everyone tries to object but Amy makes up her mind and goes back to the lair with Eggman. Amy sets to work trying to remodel the lair with a more contemporary feel but Eggman questions her decisions, wondering if they really fit with the chic he is going for.

The following week the photographer's assistant returns to the lair. Eggman is still uncertain if Amy's adjustments were really going to win him over and as the survey continues his optimism sinks. Ready to accuse Amy of derailing his lair's aesthetic, he is quickly surprised to find the assistant adores the work done in the lair and Eggman immediately takes credit for the remodel. Amy objects saying it was her design that won him over and the two argue until the photographer interrupts by saying with a little more "danger" the lair could truly be cover-material and sets out to return with his photographer. Amy, however, won't participate in any further design work if Eggman's just going to hijack the credit and storms off. Eggman doesn't let her leave so easily and traps her in a laser cage, demanding more alterations from her.

Back at the beach Sonic and friends are finding Amy's absence to be bringing them down. The food is not prepared well and Knuckles mentions food just doesn't have the same taste without Amy (although it might be because he's eating a napkin). Sonic agrees that they want Amy around again and they go to Eggman's lair to bring her home. Eggman meets them at the front door and claims Amy is now working full-time as his personal decorator but Sonic thinks something fishier is going on and decides more investigation is needed.

Still trapped in the laser cage, Amy smells something rank in the air. Just then the nearby wall crumbles and her friends burst through, using her hammer to destroy the wall. They had come through the sewer, explaining the foul smell. Sonic beats around the bush with an apology but Amy gets the gist of it and Tails frees her from the laser cage. Sonic returns her hammer and says they won't go back the way they came so they'll have to make another exit. In Eggman's inner sanctum the doctor is enjoying a cup of tea when the steel door is knocked down by Amy, who says she's obviously quitting. Eggman summons a squad of security robots and a battle breaks out.

Sonic and friends make short work of Eggman's robots before turning to Eggman himself. Eggman and his assistant robots try to make a hasty retreat but are cut off by the arrival of the photographer and her assistant. Surprised by her sudden arrival, Eggman nervously mentions she's ahead of schedule. The photographer glances around Eggman's sanctum, which is littered with the remains of the battle between the robots and Sonic's team. Completely disgusted she immediately fires her assistant, whom Orbot offers some roller coaster tickets to ease the bad news and he accepts them in a daze. Eggman chases after the photographer, desperately attempting to get her to reconsider and still include his lair in the magazine.

Amy laments that, although Eggman had tried to force her compliance, she would still have liked to see her work featured in the magazine. Sonic cheers her up by offering to let her redesign his house, which is something Amy's always wanted to do. The group leaves the lair while Sonic guarantees her "total creative freedom" but laying down some ground rules (no messing with his coconut collection and no washing, painting, plastering, or cleaning; basically excluding her from doing any sort of meaningful work).
