Recap / Sonic Boom S 1 E 2 Can An Evil Genius Crash On Your Couch For A Few Days

Go To

It's late one stormy night. Sonic and Tails are peacefully sleeping in the latter's living room when the sound of someone banging on his front door cuts through the air. At first, Sonic is reluctant to get up, but as the knocking gets louder to the point of shaking the house, he finally gives in and goes to answer the door. Surprisingly, the late caller is Dr. Eggman. The doctor is unusually cordial, thanking Sonic for answering at such a late hour. Eggman wants Sonic's assistance, telling him that the storm outside had heavily damaged his fortress and he can't live there while it's being repaired. He makes a bold request— to come live with Sonic and Tails for the time being until the repairs are finished. After some begging, Sonic agrees that Eggman's pathetic state suggests he hasn't been living well. Sonic is skeptical about the doctor's intentions but Eggman brokers a truce (even attempting to lift his trenchcoat to show he has no weapons; his arch-enemy, for obvious reasons, quickly insists he believes him) and is invited inside. Although the condition is that Eggman is only there by himself, he unsurprisingly brings along Orbot and Cubot, but Sonic is too tired to argue about it and just rolls his eyes.

The following morning, Knuckles, Amy Rose, and Sticks the Badger come over to Tails's house and are quickly shocked to find Eggman living with the pair. Eggman cheerily greets the guests while wearing some garishly pink onesie pajamas, which he shows off to everyone. Sonic explains the situation while Eggman demands Tails finish cooking his breakfast, only to nitpick over his request not being met once it's delivered. Sticks starts to rant about how Eggman is trying to exploit their kindness to unleash a new plan but Amy steps in and says it's their duty to help Eggman in his time of need. Tails agrees and says it might not be so bad to have him around. However, this turns out to be more than Sonic or Tails bargained for because Eggman is a rowdy, inconsiderate roommate who interrupts the pair's daily routine with his attempts to joke around with spontaneous pillow fights, his annoying sleeping tendencies (namely, his snoring/evil laughter), and his invasive use of the fridge.

This behavior pushes Sonic and Tails to their limit, and they find themselves airing their grievances with Eggman to Amy. Amy thinks the best way to handle this is to address their points face-to-face and invites Eggman, Sonic, and Tails to a roommate meeting, with herself as the moderator. Sonic opens the discussion by flatly telling Eggman that his conduct as a roommate is horrible and the whole house dislikes him. Amy attempts to correct Sonic's unproductive bluntness by asking him to rephrase himself but Sonic simply says Eggman living with them is making him feel angry and then uses his original words as the reason for that. Eggman becomes distraught over Sonic's harsh words and agrees that he hasn't been a good house guest because of his lack of experience living with others (apparently thinking of Orbot and Cubot as not being people). Amy asks Sonic to forgive Eggman since he seems truly sorry, and Sonic begrudgingly agrees to give Eggman another chance to live with them and they all share in a group hug (again, excluding Orbot and Cubot).

Eggman turns out to follow through, doing things like cleaning the dishes and tidying up around the house. One late night, everyone is happily playing a board game, and Eggman is doing well to the point of happily blowing loudly into his "triple-star bonus" kazoo, but it's getting late and Sonic and Tails want to sleep. He tries to get Orbot and Cubot to agree, but since they're robots without souls, they don't get tired, so Sonic takes it upon himself to leave. Eggman blocks his way and begs him to stay and keep playing, so he does. As the night drags on, the trio moves to watching TV, but Sonic and Tails are no less tired. Morning comes, and neither Sonic nor Tails have gotten any sleep at all through the previous night, Eggman having kept them awake the entire time. When Knuckles, Amy, and Sticks come over, Sticks says that keeping them awake all night is just another part of whatever scheme Eggman has been hatching while living with Sonic and Tails, but she is once again dismissed by Amy on the grounds of being paranoid. While they're talking, Eggman steps outside where his signature evil laugh is suddenly heard.

Everyone goes outside to see Eggman standing atop a rock. He begins gloating that the destruction of his island lair was a ruse, designed to convince Sonic and Tails to let him stay with them. The real reason he's been living with them was to exhaust them, making them unable to fight back against his new robot: the "Obliterator Bot", a hulking robot with clamps for hands that nearly crushes Eggman with a tree when it debuts. Sticks's paranoia is vindicated (even down to the very name of the robot), although she continues being paranoid about other things like her own shadow.

Eggman orders the robot to destroy Sonic and his four friends, but the order is misinterpreted as "destroy fortress", so Obliterator Bot sets out to destroy Eggman's fortress instead. Eggman is unable to correct the misunderstanding because of bugs in the robot's operating system that have yet to be smoothed out (at best, he is only able to send another misunderstood order to play music while destroying the fortress). Eggman's inability to control his robot leaves him begging for Sonic's help. Sonic doesn't see why he should bother, seeing as it's Eggman's robot, but Eggman reminds him that if the robot is successful, then the evil scientist really will have to live with Sonic, which inspires an immediate change of heart from the hedgehog.

Everyone flies out to Eggman's lair, where the Obliterator Bot is hard at work destroying the place. Sonic and Tails are motivated to stop the robot, but their exhaustion kicks in and they lie down on the ground and fall asleep. Sticks has to forcefully stomp on them to wake them up. Eggman explains to the group what needs to happen to stop the robot; two killswitches reside inside the lair and they are at opposite sides of the fortress. Sonic tells Knuckles, Sticks, and Amy to engage the robot while he and Tails will work the killswitches inside with Eggman's assistance. Amy offers a pre-mission group hug but Sonic promptly declines.

Sonic races past a battery of laser cannons to reach the first killswitch while Tails takes control of the security console and disables the tripwires blocking access to the rear. Their exhaustion continues to haunt them as they're nearly asleep by the time they reach the killswitches. Eggman has to race back and forth, instructing the pair on what to do while keeping them awake. Meanwhile, the other members of the team confront the Obliterator Bot. Sticks boldly challenges the robot, saying she cannot be obliterated (though she's unable to say "un-obliteratable" and simply settles on "You can't kill me"). Eggman continues to struggle with keeping Sonic and Tails awake simultaneously to shut down the robot's operation before finally resorting to using his kazoo to wake them both up, allowing them to successfully neutralize the robot's systems. With the robot disabled, Sonic rushes over and smacks it in the head with a large metal plate (even screaming "Pillow fight!" like Eggman), knocking its head off and blowing up its body. Unfortunately, the group's victory is short-lived, as their effort is all for naught; the Obliterator Bot has already done too much damage to the lair, which explodes immediately after.

Everyone is sitting on the beach afterwards, and Eggman pulls out a beach chair and joins them, reminding them that the Obliterator Bot succeeded in destroying his lair and that he'll be laying over with Sonic for the time being. Sonic wants none of that, so he runs Eggman, Orbot, and Cubot back to the site of Eggman's lair and leaves them with Amy, whose attempt at communication exercises drives Eggman mad to the point of running in the opposite direction.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Adopted to the House: When Eggman shows up on Sonic's doorstop claiming that his lair was trashed by a violent storm, Sonic willingly lets Eggman stay at his house until the latter's lair is repaired. During his stay, Eggman becomes a nuisance to Sonic and his friends, and it is later revealed his story a ruse and he was intentionally being a nuisance to exhaust Sonic and his friends.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: This exchange sums it up quite nicely:
Eggman: "Obliterator Bot, destroy Sonic and his four friends!"
Obliterator Bot: "For... tress? Fortress. Destroy fortress. Destroying island fortress."
Eggman: "What? No! That's not what I said!"
Orbot: "We're still working out a few kinks."
Eggman: (hanging on to Obliterator Bot's leg) "Obliterator Bot! Do not destroy island fortress! Do not destroy island fortress!"
Obliterator Bot: "Affirmative. Playing up-tempo music while destroying fortress."
  • Brutal Honesty: When fed up with Eggman's behavior while staying at his house, Sonic does not try to hide it.
Sonic: How do I say this delicately? You're a horrible roommate and nobody in this house likes you.
Amy: Let's frame our statements with "When you do this, it makes me feel this."
Sonic: Fine, okay. Uh, let's see... When you... live here... it makes me... feel angry... because you're a horrible roommate and nobody in this house likes you.
  • Enemy Mine: After the Obliterator Bot malfunctions and prepares to destroy Eggman's island fortress, Eggman is forced to team up with Sonic and his friends to stop it. Sonic initially refuses at first, until Eggman reveals that if his base is destroyed for real, he will have to stay with Sonic until it's repaired. Sonic decides to help him after all upon hearing that.
  • Entitled Bastard: Eggman asking the very people he tries to kill every week to put him up while his fortress in uninhabitable.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Amy thinks tossing Eggman out after he's been dickish to him and Tails is uncouth of Sonic.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Double Subverted. Eggman shows up on Sonic's doorstep and claims that his lair was trashed by a violent storm, asking if Sonic could put him up until his robots rebuild his lair. Sonic accedes, which leads to various mundane roommate hijinx between Eggman, Sonic and Tails. However the plan is a ploy, which is revealed after an all-night board game session. Eggman was just there to exhaust everyone, then sic a new robot he built on them while they were unable to defend themselves.
  • Going Commando: Sticks is revealed to be not wearing anything beneath her skirt, noticeably when she kicks Sonic awake at one point.
  • Living with the Villain: For this episode, Eggman temporarily stays at Tails’ house and Sonic and Tails are stuck putting up with him.
  • On Second Thought: Sonic's first impulse when Eggman's plan backfires is to let him suffer:
Eggman: "Sonic, you have to help me!"
    Sonic: "Why? He's your Obliteratorbot."
Eggman: "Because if you don't, I'll truly be stuck living with you until I build a new island fortress."
  • Porky Pig Pronunciation: During the battle against the Obliterator Bot, Sticks tries to tell it that she's unobliterable a few times before giving up and matter-of-factly saying "You can't kill me." instead.
  • Properly Paranoid: Sticks is convinced Eggman's presence is just a ploy to wear them down before he sics his Obliterator Bot on them... and she's absolutely right.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: When Knuckles, Amy, and Sticks show up at Sonic's house, Eggman reveals his "Evil Pajamas" to them, which are baby-pink footie pajamas, complete with a trap door in the back.
  • That Makes Me Feel Angry: When Sonic tells Eggman that he's a horrible roommate and nobody in the house likes him, Amy suggests doing this as a way to properly express his feelings. Sonic says "When you live here, it makes me feel angry... because you're a horrible roommate and nobody in this house likes you."
  • We Are Not Going Through That Again: At the end of the episode, when Eggman's base is destroyed for real, Eggman tells Sonic he'll be having an extended stay at his house. Sonic drops Eggman off at his destroyed base upon hearing this.
