Recap / Sonic Boom S 1 E 15 Aim Low

Go To

The episode begins with Team Sonic having destroyed Eggman's scorpion-bot. The doc wheels out a new robot to fight, but Sonic pulls a One-Hit KO on it. Eggman flies away, no Evil Laugh or bombastic We Will Meet Again speech, and the team can't help but note that Eggman isn't really trying anymore.

Back at his lair, Eggman has clearly fallen into depression after years of The Good Guys Always Win and decides to watch some TV. He happens upon a commercial for motivation speaker Soar the Eagle and decides to hire him to help get better. Soar later arrives and gives Eggman a seminar to help rev him up and convinces Eggman to hire him as a private tutor, though he admits they've got some work ahead of them. The two begins by getting some minor evil deeds under Eggman's belt before moving up to serious public endangerment with a rock slide. Sonic manages to prevent the damage and Amy notes Eggman is doing better.

At the lair, Eggman is feeling significantly better. Soar warns him that he shouldn't get overconfident as the program still has a ways to go, but Eggman doesn't listen and fires Soar. Soar complies, but states it won't end well for Eggman. Undeterred, Eggman begins to plot another attack, but soon finds himself stymied by even the simplest decisions without guidance. After going silent for some time, Sonic bursts into Eggman's lair to see what's up and finds the doctor has given up on himself, his ambitions aiming no higher than binge-watching TV shows.

Sonic enjoys the peace for a while, but soon grows bored without evil to fight and paranoid Eggman is still up to something, driving his friends nuts. Deciding Sonic needs evil to fight, his friends decide to re-motivate Eggman. At his base, Sonic's friends pretend to be under attack, but when Sonic arrives, he sees through the whole thing. Eggman calls Amy's plan stupid, which makes Sonic come to her defense and the two argue. Sufficiently angered, Eggman goes on the attack, Sonic stops him and the rest of them are glad things are back to normal.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Bad "Bad Acting": When trying to convince Sonic that Eggman is attacking them, the rest of Team Sonic act overly dramatic. Sonic sees right through it.
  • Berserk Button: Sonic only gets angry when Eggman calls Amy's re-motivation plan dumb.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Deconstructed. Without any evil to fight, Sonic quickly becomes listless and paranoid.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • One of the pictures seen on the shelves in Amy's house is the penguin picture that Amy showed to Orbot and Cubot in "Dude, Where's My Eggman?".
    • During the scene where Sonic's friends are blocking Eggman's view of the television, the show on the screen appears to be the exact same episode of Pawn Shop Wars: Gogoba Edition that Sonic was watching in "Eggheads".
  • Evil Is Petty: Invoked. Soar has Eggman commit some minor evil deeds in order to get back into the swing of things.
  • Foil: Sonic and Eggman both need each other to have purpose in life, but they react to that loss of purpose in different ways. Eggman becomes a sadsack, frittering away the day watching TV and lacking the will to even care about intruders in his lair. Sonic, meanwhile, continues to have drive but nowhere to direct it, so he keeps pestering everyone else with his competitiveness and is constantly on edge over Eggman possibly committing evil again.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: It starts with Eggman getting therapy for his depression, then switches to the gang trying to motivate Eggman themselves.
  • Hidden Depths: Knuckles, normally portrayed as a clumsy doofus, manages to build a simple yet well-constructed birdhouse.
  • I Can't Believe I'm Saying This: Amy when saying they have to re-motivate Eggman into being a villain again.
  • Ignored Expert: After experiencing some success, Eggman chafes at Soar saying he still has a lot of steps in therapy left to complete.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: The rest of Team Sonic find that Eggman's various plots are preferable to Sonic constantly bothering them.
  • The Power of Hate: Ultimately, what gets Eggman back into fighting Sonic.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The way Dr. Eggman grumbles when returning to his lair after Scorpion-bot's defeat sounds familiar to the trademark grumbling said by the Hanna-Barbera character Muttley.
    • When Eggman claims he got his confidence back, he does the Moonwalk, and another move done by Michael Jackson.
    • When Eggman goes into his state of depression after firing Soar, Orbot tells Sonic that the only planning Eggman's doing is marathoning through the fourth season of Hedgehog Abbey.
  • Status Quo Is God: Invoked. Amy decides they have to bring it back to keep Sonic from driving everyone crazy.
  • Victory Is Boring: This episode has Eggman depressed, binging, and watching hedgehog soap operas following his consecutive defeats at the hands of Team Sonic and firing Soar. After seeing this, Sonic is relieved that he doesn't have to worry about him anymore... At first. After a while, he slowly starts going mad from the boredom, halting his friends' progress on their respective projects.
  • The Voiceless: Sticks appears, but doesn't say anything. According to Bill Freiberger, her lines were apparently cut for time.
