Recap / Solar Opposites S 2 E 6 The Apple Pencil Pro

Go To

The Solar Opposites are accused and arrested for allegedly torturing and turning a Genius Bar employee, Peter, into a pig monstrosity. However, the aliens have no recollection of this and believe they are being framed.

Inside the Wall, Halk catches the murderer, who reveals that there is a hole in the wall that Tim knows about.

The episode contains the following tropes:

  • The Bad Guy Wins: Miss Frankie not only succeeds in framing the solar opposites and psychologically scarring them but also gets their reputations permanently ruined and had them subjected to agonizing torture all while only suffering a minor punishment herself.
  • The Chessmaster: Miss Frankie orchestrates a revenge plot against the solar opposites by exploiting the public’s disdain of them and the alien’s rusty understanding of Earth’s customs. She also managed to get two other people to help her, tortured Peter so she could use him to frame the aliens, and planter fake evidence in the aliens house so she could both make the aliens believe they tortured Peter and throw them off her trail.
  • Come to Gawk: The solar opposites get sentenced at Peter’s recommendation to torture by bullet ants in front of a public crowd for the torture against Peter, which they didn’t really commit. This is odd considering that this series takes place in America and such a punishment is considered unconstitutional.
  • Create Your Own Villain: Yumulack does this to Miss Frankie after he mutates her skeleton, which traumatized her after she accidentally kills a security guard with her new claws.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Tim execute Ethan, Sonny and Enrique by coating them in Magic Shell (a chocolate syrup that hardens into a shell when exposed to cold, such as ice-cream) which suffocated them.
  • Cycle of Revenge: The rivalry between Korvo and Matthew is filled with them getting revenge on each other. Korvo gets back at Matthew for being rude to him over Christmas sweaters by turning him and his house into gingerbread with the holiday cannon. Matthew in turn gets back at Korvo for it by framing him for torturing Peter.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Miss Frankie framed the entire family for animal cruelty and had them subjected to torture and public humiliation all because Yumulack and Jesse mutated her hands at school. Although Miss Frankie was pushed too far, framing Korvo and Terry alongside their kids seems way too disproportionate.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted for Ethan, Sonny and Enrique. Tim pretends to forgive them for their crimes in the Wall before executing them in chocolate syrup.
  • Frame-Up: Near the end of the episode, it is revealed that Miss Frankie was the one truly responsible for torturing Peter the mutant pig. She and two other accomplices framed the solar opposites by dressing up as them with crudely painted masks that represented their faces.
  • Foreshadowing: While discussing who the true culprit could possibly be, Yumulack’s first guess is Miss Frankie, confessing to Korvo and Terry that he mutated her skeleton a week earlier to get out of a test. As it turns out, Yumulack was right.
    • Korvo in the flashback referring to using his tech as Sci-Fi Shit. A phrase only human characters have used before to refer to their exploits.
  • Guilt by Association Gag: Miss Frankie targeted Korvo and Terry to have them arrested and punished alongside the replicants because they are aliens and they are Jesse and Yumulack’s parents.
  • Hypocrite: Miss Frankie boasts that she set the solar opposites up to make them “pay for their crimes” yet she was revealed to have broken the law herself in order to achieve this.
  • Internal Reveal: Halk learns that there is indeed a hole to the outside behind the former Duke's office.
  • Karma Houdini: Downplayed. Miss Frankie gets away with committing animal cruelty and framing the aliens for her crimes but her only “punishment” for it is that she accidentally kills the accomplices who helped her with her mutant claws.
    • Averted for Ethan, Sonny and Enrique, as Tim doesn't excuse them for their crimes.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Downplayed. While Miss Frankie targeted Yumulack and Jesse who were the ones responsible for mutating and traumatizing her, she also targeted Korvo and Terry despite the fact that they did not know about the incident until after they were put in jail. In addition, Miss Frankie purchased masks of Korvo, Terry and Jesse’s faces to do the crimes but she didn’t purchase a Yumulack mask.
  • No Ending: The plot involving the aliens does not get resolved and just ends with them being publicly humiliated.
  • Revenge: Miss Frankie frames the Solar Opposites for animal abuse in retaliation for the mutation of her hands by Yumulack as the mutation caused her to accidentally kill a bystander and traumatize her.
  • Shoot the Shaggy Dog: The aliens escape from prison and attempts to clear their names are rendered futile as their attempts to find evidence of their innocence only implicate them even further and make them believe they are monsters. They are then convicted of the crimes and sentenced to public humiliation and torture by bullet ants. They are also unable to find out who framed them either.
  • Temporarily a Villain: Miss Frankie. It’s justified towards Yumulack and maybe Jesse but the other solar opposites are innocent.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Nobody expected Miss Frankie to be capable of playing Chessmaster and be very good at psychological manipulation and the ability to craft very clever plans.
  • Took A Level In Jerk Ass: However it was not really nice of her to target Korvo and Terry for what Yumulack did.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Peter is completely unaware of the fact that his captors made him sentient and tortured him just so they could trick him into falsely accusing the solar opposites of the crimes.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Ethan spends his last moments begging for his life shortly before he is coated in Magic Shell.
