Recap / Sofia The First S 3 E 20 Dads And Daughters Day

Go To

It's time for Royal Prep's annual Dads and Daughter's field trip, and Sofia is excited until Hildegard tells her that King Roland isn't her real father. This makes Sofia feel like she doesn't belong on the field trip.

Tropes

  • An Aesop:
    • Stepfathers are just as real as birth fathers.
    • Listen to someone's warnings and leave the wild animals alone.
  • Aesop Amnesia: Hildegard hasn't learned her lesson to leave the Enchanted Animals alone even after her spoiled attitude got everyone (except Roland and Sofia) cornered by angry Pelicants.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Amber is less than pleased when Hildegard tells Sofia that Roland isn't her real father.
  • Broken Aesop: Hildegard hurts Sofia's feelings by saying to her face that Roland isn't her real father, and it doesn't help that Roland and Amber are talking about their past field trips while Sofia is listening, feeling left out. Sofia gets called out for the way she's feeling and has to learn that even when Roland isn't related to her by blood, he's still her real father. She wouldn't have felt that way if Hildegard, Amber, and Roland had thought more about her feelings. A more consistent moral for this episode would've been "Be thoughtful of other's feelings" than "Stepdads are just as real as dad-dads".
  • Chekhov's Skill: Sofia and Roland play dazzleball in the beginning. This skill comes in handy later in the episode when they're unable to climb out of the gully and hold the Pelicants' egg at the same time.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Hildegard is the reason for the situations in this episode.
    • Sofia wouldn't have questioned her place in Roland's heart if Hildegard hadn't told her that he wasn't her real father in the first place.
    • King Henrik giving into Hildegard's spoiled attitude got everyone (except Sofia and Roland) chased by a group of angry Pelicants. Not only does Amber angrily scold Hildegard for wanting that Pelicant egg so badly, but Miss Elodie tells Henrik that she told him this would happen, and he didn't listen.
  • Death Glare: Miss Elodie and the dads and daughters give this to Hildegard and Henrik for getting them cornered by the angry Pelicants.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Amber may have been done bad things to get what she wanted in previous episodes, but she wasn't against telling Hildegard off for her spoiled attitude in this episode, especially when she says that Roland is not Sofia's real father.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Without thinking, Hildegard tells Sofia that Roland isn't her real father. When Amber calls her out for this, Hildegard tells Sofia to forget she ever said that. Amber and Roland are this when they talk about their past Dads and Daughters field trips and Sofia is listening, feeling miserable.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Hildegard may not have gotten into trouble for saying that Roland isn't Sofia's real father, but for doing that and putting everyone's lives in danger by saying that she wanted the Pelicant egg, she truly deserved the humiliation of falling out of the boat and into the river.
  • Pushover Parents: King Henrik proves to be this, giving into Hildegard's demands. He even takes the Pelicants'egg despite Miss Elodie's warnings. After the group was chased and cornered by the Pelicants, he finally says no to his daughter's demands and tells her that it's time she learned she can't get everything she wants.
  • Spoiled Brat: Hildegard proves herself to be this more than Amber, constantly telling her father that she wants an Enchanted Animal.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Amber rightfully calls Hildegard out for not only telling Sofia that Roland isn't her real father but demanding the Pelicant egg, which got almost everyone cornered by the angry Pelicants.
