Recap / Sofia The First S 2 E 18 The Curse Of Princess Ivy

Go To

After watching Sofia play hopscotch in the garden, Amber learns the secret behind her sister's amulet and wants a turn with it. Since Sofia won't let her (because she promise her dad that she will never take it off), Amber takes the amulet while her sister is sleeping and tries to summon Rapunzel. But stealing the amulet counts as a bad deed, causing the amulet to curse Amber by summoning the evil Princess Ivy, who is now intent on not only taking over Enchancia but destroying the amulet. Now it's up to Amber to break the curse and earn Sofia's forgiveness.

Tropes

  • Act of True Love: When Amber lets herself get hit by the dragonfly meant for Sofia, this ultimate risk is what breaks the curse and Ivy is sent home.
  • An Aesop:
    • To make up for a bad deed, put someone else's needs first.
    • Getting what you want is never worth betraying someone who trusted you.
  • Awful Truth: Amber wants a turn wearing the Amulet and goes as far as stealing it because it's the only way to get what she wants, which results in the Amulet cursing her. It's not until after the sisters get stranded in a hole and Sofia says right to Amber's face that she regrets trusting her that the Amber finally accepts that getting what she wanted isn't worth stealing the Amulet and betraying Sofia's trust, especially because she pushed Sofia into trusting her when Sofia knew from the start that Amber couldn't be trusted.
  • Berserk Button: Stealing Sofia's amulet and betraying her for a selfish reason is one mistake you should avoid.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Sofia's a total sweetheart, but she isn't afraid to call out Amber for her selfishness.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Sofia has this moment when she realizes that the Amulet brought Ivy to Enchancia as a curse on Amber.
Amber: How was I supposed to know your amulet would summon an evil princess? Why would it even do that?
Sofia: I don't know. The Amulet only does bad things when...(realizes) Oh, no!
    Amber: What?
Sofia: The Amulet put a curse on you!
Amber: Put a curse on me? Why?
Sofia: Because those are the rules. "With each deed performed for better or worse, a power is granted, a blessing or curse!" You stole the Amulet from me, so it cursed you by bringing Princess Ivy here!
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Amber thinks it's unfair that Sofia has a magical amulet, kicking off the plot of the special.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Amber does this when Ivy fires a dragonfly meant for Sofia, which breaks the curse.
  • Hypocrite: Amber calls Sofia selfish for refusing to let her wear her amulet while she herself is being selfish, not only getting upset over Sofia's refusal, but also choosing to betray Sofia by stealing the Amulet. It's not until the climax that Amber accepts that she was the one being selfish, not Sofia.
  • It's All About Me: Upon learning of Sofia's amulet, all Amber cares about is getting a turn with it and goes as far as to stealing it and betraying her sister's trust to get what she wants. This is why the amulet curses her in the first place.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Ivy can summon magical dragonflies which erase the memory of whoever they come into contact with.
  • Never My Fault: Subverted. While Amber never says that none of the events is her fault, she outright complains about having to go after Ivy and climbing up the Blazing Palisades like Ivy's presence in the kingdom happened out of nowhere and has to be reminded by Sofia and Cedric that she's the one who caused the problem in the first place because she stole Sofia's amulet.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Amber's jealousy of Sofia's amulet gets the better of her, resulting in her unwittingly stealing it and unleashing Ivy.
  • No Ontological Inertia: All of Ivy's color-draining magic is undone when the curse is broken. On the other hand, the amnesia isn't.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: You know you did something bad to Sofia when she lashes out at you.
  • Pep-Talk Song: After confessing to Rapunzel about her selfish act of stealing Sofia's amulet, Rapunzel sings "Dare to Risk It All" to Amber to help her figure out how to break the curse and make up for her betrayal of Sofia's trust.
  • Quit Your Whining: When Amber complains about having to climb all the way to the top of the Blazing Palisades, Sofia shuts her up by reminding her that it's her fault for making this happen in the first place.
  • Regretful Traitor: At the climax, Amber comes to accept that getting what she wanted wasn't worth all the trouble she caused.
  • Take a Third Option: Ivy gives Amber a gut-wrenching decision; either she gives her the amulet, or Sofia gets the next dragonfly. Amber takes an unexpected third option by letting herself get hit by the dragonfly to protect Sofia, which in turn breaks the curse and sends Ivy home.
  • Taking the Bullet: Amber throws herself in front of the memory-erasing dragonfly meant for Sofia, thus losing her memory of the episode's events; this in turn is what causes the curse to end, and Ivy is sent home and her spells are broken.
  • Undying Loyalty: When Amber betrays Sofia and swipes it off her neck, the amulet is able to tell Amber is not its chosen bearer and thus bestows the Curse of Princess Ivy.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Sofia really lets Amber have it when it turns out that the amulet summoned an evil princess as a result of stealing it from Sofia.
Sofia: How could you do this, Amber? I trusted you!
Amber: I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I just wanted a turn.
Sofia: Well, you got it, and now an evil princess is going to take over our kingdom. This is the worst thing you've ever done!
  • Wham Shot: Two in quick succession after Amber lets herself get hit by the dragonfly meant for Sofia. First, Ivy's dragonflies begin vanishing when she tries to use them. Second and most importantly, the amulet begins to blaze brightly, as a sign Amber's Act of True Love is what broke the curse.
  • World-Healing Wave: When the curse is broken and Ivy is sent home, all of the color washes back over the castle and kingdom in a magical wave.
