She's Born! The Perfect Smile, Cure Happy!! (known as An Exciting Beginning in the Glitter Force version) is the first episode of Smile Pretty Cure! and the 390th episode overall in the Pretty Cure franchise.
While running late for school, a girl named Miyuki Hoshizura encounters a fairy named Candy, who helps her transform into a Pretty Cure.
Tropes:
- Affectionate Nickname: In Glitter Force, Emily refers to Kelsey as "Kels" when taking the desk behind her.
- Big Sister Instinct: Nao scolds Akane for being too pushy with Miyuki on her first day, when she's clearly nervous.
- Call-Back: Candy is introduced via bonking Miyuki right in the face, a la Mepple and Chypre.
- Establishing Character Moment: This episode sets up the core of the main characters.
- Akane Hino as the Plucky Comic Relief in trying to ease Miyuki out of being nervous on her first day with her sense of humor, also a Mr. Exposition in introducing the others to Miyuki along while each girl's character archetype to their embarrassment.
- Nao Midorikawa showing a Big Sister Instinct as she and Reika Aoki scold Akane for being too pushy.
- Yayoi Kise being the Proneto Tears Nice Girl in talking to Miyuki before being hurt by Akane playfully mentions she's a crybaby. The Glitter Force dub adds a touch of Cloudcuckoolander when she likes the new student's name because she had a hamster with the same name.
- Gratuitous English: When Akane goes back to her seat, she says "thank you, thank you" in English.
- Gratuitous French: She follows this up with "merci beaucoup".
- Late for School: Miyuki's dilemma in the episode's opening.
- Not in Kansas Anymore: In the Glitter Force dub, Emily says this word-for-word when teleported into the Magical Library.
- One-Steve Limit: Averted; we get another Miyuki, another Reika, another Akane, and another Nao. Seems like Yayoi hit the jackpot.
- Pink Heroine: Like Cure Melody before her, Cure Happy is decked out in pink.
- Squee: Miyuki's reaction to seeing Candy for the first time. In the Glitter Force dub, she asks where she can buy a plushie of her.
- Wrong Genre Savvy: After transforming, Cure Happy hides from Wolfrun behind a brick wall of a house, citing "The Three Little Pigs" in a reasoning that of how The Big Bad Wolf couldn't get through a brick house. Wolfrun laughs it off and simply creates a Monster of the Week from the aforementioned brick wall.
