Tropes present in the episode:

  • Antagonist Title: Bizarro is the titular phantom of the episode.
  • Body Surf: Bizarro survives by doing this to people.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Bizarro manifests these in his host bodies before becoming Clark's Evil Twin.
  • Cliffhanger: Season 6 ends with Lana apparently dead, Lionel trapped under rubble, Chloe apparently dead after using her meteor ability to heal Lois, Lex being arrested by the police for Lana's murder as Reeves Dam starts to collapse, Clark sent flying through the air by Bizarro, and Bizarro flying towards the camera with a Slasher Smile.
  • Demonic Possession: When Martian Manhunter finds Bizarro he is doing this, with even a priest trying to exorcise him.
  • Domestic Abuser: Lex slaps Lana after she tells him Clark means more to her than he ever will.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Lois agrees to stop following the 33.1 case and tears up the phone number she was given in half... and then realizes that the eight-digit number is now two four-digit numbers. It's actually coordinates.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Bizarro speaks in a deeper tone of voice, no matter what form he's in.
  • Evil Twin: Bizarro becomes Clark's in the final act, after taking some of Clark's DNA.
  • Glamour Failure: Bizarro's face turns white and blocky when he's exposed to sunlight.
  • Kill and Replace: Bizarro announces his intentions to do this to Clark after taking on his form.
Bizarro: I took a little piece of your DNA. Now I'm gonna take your life.
  • Killed Off for Real: Bartlett by Bizarro.
  • Mysterious Protector: J'onn reveals to Clark that Jor-El asked him to watch over him from a distance.
J'onn: When Krypton was on the verge of annihilation, [Jor-El] asked me to keep an eye out for you.
Clark: Where have you been all these years?
J'onn: Watching from a distance. Your father wanted you to pass the test without any help.
Lionel: He wasn't to interfere unless it was absolutely necessary.
J'onn: When you unleashed those phantoms, your life was at stake. I didn't have a choice.
Lionel: Like what happened at the docks in Seattle.
Clark: When that phantom infected my mind.
    J'onn: That's right.
  • Neck Lift: Bizarro executes this on Clark after taking his form.
  • Never My Fault: True to form, Lex blames Lana leaving him on her feelings for Clark. While there is some truth to this, Lana leaving Lex is more a result of Lex faking Lana's pregnancy to trick her into marriage.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Clark tries using the Crystal of El on Bizarro, only for the crystal to prove ineffective against the final Phantom, thus enabling Bizarro to take a sample of his Kryptonian DNA and become his Evil Twin. Lionel also tries to stop Bizarro with kryptonite, only to find it makes him stronger instead.
  • Put on a Bus: Martha leaves Smallville, and therefore the series, in this episode.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Clark embarks on this against Lionel after finding out that Lionel blackmailed Lana into marrying Lex, and later against Lex after learning that Lana died and believing Lex is responsible.
  • Season Finale: The show's sixth.
  • Slasher Smile: Bizarro has this on full display as he flies towards the camera and his face changes to a chalky, stone-like visage, ending the season.
  • Swiss-Army Tears: Chloe's tears activate her powers and heal Lois.
  • Villain of the Week: The final Phantom Zone escapee, otherwise known as Bizarro.
  • What the Hell Are You?: Asked verbatim by Clark, to which Bizarro replies:
    Bizarro: I'm you...only a little more bizarre.
