Clark turns to Lionel for help when Lex is arrested for the murder of a young woman. Lana meets Jason's mother Genevieve, who bears a striking resemblance to a woman in a nightmare she had the night before.

Tropes present in the episode:

  • Abusive Mom: Genevieve Teague certainly won't be winning any "Mother of the Year" awards anytime soon.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Lex asserts this to be the case between himself and Lionel when Clark challenges his suspicion that Lionel set him up for murder.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Shannon rants to Lex that they slept together twice and he never once recognized her, even when she did it at the party to frame him.
  • Clark Kenting: Shannon Bell, the true culprit, wears a pair of glasses when she is next seen after Lex hooks up with her. It is doubtful Lex would have recognized even without this trope in play as he generally doesn't pay much attention to the faces of his one-night stands.
  • Clear My Name: Lex is framed for the murder of a young woman, so Clark sets out to clear his name.
  • Consulting a Convicted Killer: Clark speaks with Lionel in prison to get help in clearing Lex's name, and Lionel gives him helpful advice. Chloe even jokingly compares this to Hannibal Lecter aiding the investigation of a murder.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: Shannon Bell, an assistant to Lex's attorney, is the one who framed Lex for murder.
  • Elevator Going Down: Lex during the intro. Clark and Chloe later awkwardly try to reenact it during their investigation.
  • Evil Matriarch: Genevieve Teague, Jason's mother who had her son lead Lana to Isobel's tomb.
  • Frame-Up: Perpetuated by Shannon Bell against Lex.
  • Lady in Red: Shannon is first seeing wearing a red dress, obviously with the intent of catching Lex's attention.
  • Mundanger: Shannon Bell has no special powers.
  • The Murder After: After Lex's sleeps with a woman during the intro he wakes up to to find her dead body in bed with him. Later it's revealed to not be the same woman.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Clark starts to doubt Lex's innocence when he finds out that Lex's one-night stand was not a one-off occurrence as he claimed. Clark's faith in Lex's innocence is further tested when he finds Lex trying to dispose of evidence at Eve Andrews's home.
  • Not Me This Time: Lionel is not the one setting up Lex.
  • Orgy of Evidence: Lex's guilt is very believable considering he was found next to victim's body by a maid. The fact he had a previous sexual encounter with her only makes him look like a more believable suspect.
  • Reformed, but Rejected: Lionel, fresh off his experience with the Crystal of Water, tries to mend fences with Lex in the final act, but Lex just rebuffs him.
Lex: You've got your health, Dad. Don't expect another miracle.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Eve Andrews, the victim, is revealed to have been one of many women who were stalking Lex. He had actually slept with her prior to the events of the episode and she had been obsessed with him ever since.
  • Villain of the Week: Shannon Bell, a jilted lover of Lex's.
  • Woman Scorned: Shannon Bell, to Lex.
