While Jonathan awaits heart surgery, Clark befriends Garrett, a classmate who just lost his older brother, Vince. When Vince later shows up alive but then begins dying again, Garrett straps a Kryptonite bomb to his chest and takes the hospital hostage, demanding that the doctors help Vince.

Tropes present in the episode:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Vince called Garrett "runt," a name Garrett claims he hated.
  • Anti-Villain: Garrett is a Type III. His actions are motivated by desperation to keep his brother alive.
  • Applied Phlebotinum:
  • Back from the Dead: Vince, thanks to Dr. Teng's serum. It doesn't last, though.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Jonathan survives his surgery, but in the end both Garrett and Vince die.
  • Body Horror: Vince goes through the same thing as Adam when his liver starts to deteriorate (his skin turns yellow and starts peeling, and Tears of Blood).
  • Code Silver: Garrett takes the Smallville Medical Center hostage.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: Heroic example. When Clark finds out people have figured out how to use his blood to resurrect the dead, he feels like he might have a moral responsibility to out himself to the world so that this research can be properly continued and have a renewable supply.
  • Event Title: The title refers to Vince coming back to life.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Garrett has quite a temper. He himself admits this.
  • Man Hug: Clark gives Jonathan one after the latter agrees to have heart surgery.
  • Mundanger: Garrett has no superhuman powers.
  • Mythology Gag: Clark remarks he always thought of his father as a "man of steel."
  • Promotion to Parent: Vince looked after Garrett after their parents died.
  • Relocating the Explosion: Clark does this with the Kryptonite bomb using a lead vest from a nearby radiology lab.
  • Strapped to a Bomb: Garrett straps a Kryptonite bomb to his chest and takes the hospital hostage.
  • Tears of Blood: Happens to Vince when he starts to deteriorate.
  • Villain of the Week: Garrett Davis, a boy desperate to keep his older brother alive.
