Tropes present in the episode:

  • Buried Alive: Chloe is subjected to this, courtesy of Watts. Clark, fortunately, rescues her.
  • Dirty Cop: Deputy Watts, who kidnapped Chloe and buried her alive as part of a plan to become Smallville's best police officer. When his plan is thwarted, he kidnaps Lana and prepares to kill her so he can solve her murder and become famous for doing so.
  • Internal Reveal: After meeting with Eddie Cole, Lex has a team dig up the field where Clark's spaceship crash-landed during the 1989 meteor shower, and the team finds the octagonal key to the ship.
  • Jerkass: Deputy Birdego, who rudely dismisses Lana's visions. However, he later apologizes for his previous behavior.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: Watts wears a mask when going about his evil deeds.
  • Motive Rant: Watts gives one to Lana near the end.
Lana: You kidnapped Chloe so you could take credit for finding her?
Watts: I could have been a good cop! The best cop this town's ever seen! This case would've made my career!
  • Mundanger: Gary Watts is a normal human with no superpowers.
  • Red Herring: Because of Birdego's rudeness, you'll be forgiven to assume he's the assailant.
  • She Knows Too Much: Because Lana knew where Chloe was buried, Watts kidnapped her next.
  • Villain of the Week: Deputy Gary Watts, a Dirty Cop who schemes to become Smallville's best police officer.
