Shy Reborn.

"Mid-21st Century. A darkness was looming across the globe. The world was on the brink of war. But suddenly, all over the world…individuals who carried great power suddenly appeared. Through their efforts, the world was at peace once more! These powerful individuals who dressed up in odd and embarrassing outfits, are referred to by people of the previous era as…”heroes”."

Shy- Chapter One: I am SHY! is the first chapter of Miki Bukimi’s Superhero manga.

Japan’s sole hero, Teru Momijiyama/Shy becomes ostracized after letting a civilian get injured. She completely loses her confidence but eventually bounces back to save the day.

Tropes:

  • 10-Minute Retirement: Teru ends up taking one thanks to a Psychosomatic Superpower Outage.
  • 20 Minutes into the Future: The Opening Narration notes that Superheroes were born in the Mid-21st century.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Even powerless, Teru can not go home when she sees a hotel on fire.
  • Condescending Compassion: After Iko Koishikawa is injured in Shy’s rescued attempt of her, a TV correspondent notes that Shy is a child but this is mostly to undermind her standing as a hero.
TV Correspondent: To begin with, isn’t this hero called Shy still only a child? I think it’s unusual for anyone in this modern society to place unreasonable responsibilities on a child in the first place!
  • Cool Big Sis: Pepesha Andreanof/Spirits acts as one to Teru as she is a more seasoned superhero and when Teru is depressed she comes into her room to cheer her up. In the finale, Spirits arrives Just in Time to help Teru evacuate the burning hotel.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Several superheroes who will be more prominent characters later on make cameos in this chapter such as Stardust, Lady Black and Century.
  • Heroic BSoD: Teru goes into a massive one after accidentally letting Koishikawa get grievously injured.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: Nvillio nicknamed Ebio serves as this to Shy.
  • Opening Narration: The chapter begins with one, bringing up the reader up to speed on the differences between this fictional world and ours.
  • Psychosomatic Superpower Outage: Teru loses the ability to transform when she becomes depressed.
  • Shrinking Violet: Teru is extremely socially awkward and reserved, even throwing up after being the opening act for Heartman.
  • Super Loser: Becoming a superhero unfortunately has not increased Teru’s confidence.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: The whiplash from a rollercoaster cart being thrown off the rails and caught in mid-air is enough to seriously wound a child.
  • Ungrateful Townsfolk: Shy’s detractors seemingly fail to mention that every single other person on the rollercoaster was evacuated without a scratch.
  • Wham Shot: After catching the rollercoaster cart Teru goes to her on the passenger, to find her unconvious and soaked in her own blood.
