Recap / She Ra And The Princesses Of Power S 1 E 01

Go To

Sneaking out after a training mission, Horde soldier Adora finds an uncanny sword in the Whispering Woods. Princess Glimmer wants it for the Rebellion.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Catra's first scene with Adora: she waits until after Adora already destroyed the bot, pushes it into a pit so she can get equal credit, watches her fall into said pit, and after having a short conversation tells Adora that "nothing's too low for me", seemingly setting the two up to be bitter rivals in the Horde. Then she giggles, offers her hand to Adora, and tells her she looks stupid hanging there, while Adora has a fond look on her face establishing the two as friends.
  • By the Hair: A mild, Played for Laughs example when Catra drags Adora by her ponytail.
  • Delayed Reaction: Whilst searching the Whispering Woods for the sword, Adora, Bow, and Glimmer inadvertently run into each other. It takes a moment for both parties to realize they just ran straight into the enemy and react.
  • Finger Gun: While looking at herself in a mirror, Adora briefly makes her hands resemble guns while making "pew" sounds.
  • Furry Reminder: Catra sleeps curled up at the foot of Adora's bed.
  • Go to Your Room!: While grounding her daughter for her insubordination, Queen Angella tells Glimmer to go to her room.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Adora and Catra take a joy ride on one of the Horde's skiffs to the Whispering Woods. Not only does Catra drive right into the place where apparently no Horde soldier ever comes back from, but she guns the gas as well. She's also uncaring about the fuel consumption, noting that it's a problem for "future Adora and Catra."
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, Catra once reacted like a real cat towards a mouse.
  • No, You: Adora tells Catra "No you drove [the skiff] into a tree." after the latter tells her she did just that.
  • Obliviously Evil: Adora is completely unaware of the Horde's infamous reputation as conquerors, having believed the Horde's propaganda that they are liberating Etheria from the princesses and, when they find a destroyed village, denies that the Horde could be responsible. Bow promptly lampshades it:
Bow: Your army is called the Evil Horde.
    Adora: Who calls us that?!
    Bow: [Beat] Everybody!
  • Rank Up: Adora gets promoted to Force Captain after her squad's latest training exercise, with her CO Shadow Weaver telling her that the Horde's leader Hordak is pleased with her progress. However, only Adora is getting promoted, with the rest of the squad deemed unfit for combat. This causes tension between her and Catra.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Adora manages to retrieve the sword and cut her bonds while the bug monster is distracted attacking Bow and Glimmer, giving her the perfect opportunity to escape her captors. Instead, she calls the monster away from the two and transforms into She-Ra to protect them.
  • You Are Grounded!: After Queen Angella and Commander Glimmer's argument gets increasingly heated, Angella promptly gives Glimmer her punishment for insubordination...a grounding, revealing that the two are actually mother and daughter.
