Recap / Shadows over Meridian, Chapter 31: Night incidents

Go To

Everyone at Snowpoint is expecting to have a peaceful night after the eventful day, only for Vera to ruin those plans.

  • Accidental Pervert: A Ninja Khan invokes this by sneaking behind one prisoner and literally kicking his butt, causing him to touch the behinds of the two women walking in front of him as he tries to regain his balance. Failing to notice the ninja that slinks away, the angered women give the man a slap and a groin attack before more ninjas subdue all three of them.
  • Alarm SOS: The guard accompanying Caroline and Maya attempts to sound the alarm with his horn, only for Vera to stop him. Maya manages to blow in it during the ensuing fight, alerting the entire fortress of the rioters who are quickly subdued.
  • All Webbed Up: Maya restrains several rioters by encasing them in her webbing. Sofia does the same with Rolf and his partner so that the Ninja Khan will leave the infirmary to hunt for other escapees and let her focus on saving her daughter.
  • Attack the Injury: When Maya raises the alarm and Vera attempts to attack her again, Caroline makes her collapse by kicking her injured leg.
  • Benevolent Boss: Jade has Rosetta give Tyrian eye drops to treat his eyes that have been sore since Chapter 26.
  • Berserk Button:
    • As Maya told Caroline in the former's debut chapter, Sofia doesn't like to be compared to Cedric, as Alan finds out.
    • Jade doesn't take to being dismissed as Just a Kid very well, as shown by her reaction to a rioter calling her a mere demon child.
  • Beware the Nice Ones:
    • The optimistic healer Maya firmly tells off Vera for mistreating Caroline and uses her beast form to attack the madwoman.
    • Sofia also won't stand for the nonsense the riot is causing.
    • When Vera is about to kill Maya, Caroline attacks her ex-friend in fury and actually attempts to choke her while giving her a piece of her mind.
  • Big "NO!":
    • Tinsley yells this in objection to Vera's plans.
    • Vera lets out three no's that rise in volume when her escape attempt is foiled by a dozen Samurai Khan surrounding her.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Amelia and Vathek have a simultaneous one when Tinsley informs them of Vera's plan to assassinate Jade.
  • Blade Lock: Vera does this with a soldier named Altaria.
  • Blasting It Out of Their Hands:
    • When confronted by a squad of rioters, the guard accompanying Caroline and Maya attempts to blow in his horn to sound the alarm, but he drops his horn when Vera throws a knife in his hand.
    • After Maya takes a sword strike from Vera for Caroline, a Ninja Khan disarms Vera with a thrown shuriken.
  • Blind Seer: Tyrian tells Rosetta that the founder of his religion was Blinded by the Light of one of Meridian's past queens as punishment, but he felt instead that he was able to truly see the world in darkness and had a vision foretelling of the dark goddess who'll bring forth a new era of darkness and free everyone from the blinding light of Meridian's queens.
  • Call-Back: The prisoners in Snowpoint are rebel soldiers who were captured when Jade's relief force saved the fortress from Elyon's army. The elderly soldier Barnabas is Caroline's acquaintance, while another soldier named Rolf is Alan's friend.
  • Cassandra Truth: Tinsley and Caroline try to warn the rioters about the origins of the Shadowkhan to prevent them from being killed, but with Vera assuring the soldiers, they quickly dismiss the two girls' words as hysteria and enemy propaganda. After the Shadowkhan start showing up, Rolf wishes they had listened to Tinsley and Caroline.
  • Choosing Neutrality: Knowing Vera's plans are likely to fail and they themselves have little chance of escaping the fortress, Vathek, Amelia and Tinsley decide to remain in their cells so that they won't be accused of taking part in the riot.
  • Cliffhanger: With the riot put down, Vera is recaptured by Jade who decides to put a stop to the maniac's troublemaking once and for all.
  • Combat Medic:
    • Maya uses her beast form's advantages to protect Caroline from Vera. However, since the young healer's not really a fighter, she's soon overpowered by the trained hurtress.
    • Though Caroline feels she's only a healer, she still physically assaults Vera before the latter can kill Maya. She then receives a beatdown from the physically superior Vera, but when the latter attempts to attack Maya again, Caroline stops her by kicking her injured leg and rises up, still willing to challenge Vera despite her bruised face.
  • Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are: After dispatching a group of rioters, Jade senses that Vera is hiding nearby and tells the madwoman to show up before she counts to three. When she gets to three, Vera pulls a Super Window Jump in an ultimately futile effort to escape.
  • Continuity Nod: Jade senses the fear and hatred emanating from a hiding Vera as a nod to her ability to sense other creatures' dark emotions in Kage.
  • Defiant to the End: Vera orders Altaria's remaining Lurden comrade to be killed. As Altaria is being taken to a cell, she hears the Lurden going down fighting.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Caroline, who's already suffered from Vera's abuse of their friendship and gotten her hand cut without so much as an apology, takes some additional verbal abuse from her psychotic ex-friend, but when Vera attempts to deliver the killing blow to Maya, Caroline finally snaps and viciously attacks Vera to protect her new friend, enabling Maya to put a stop to the rampage. As extra karma for cutting her palm, Caroline kicks Vera's injured leg to make her collapse.
  • Dope Slap: Barnabas smacks the head of his fellow rioter when he disapproves of the latter threatening Maya.
  • Faint in Shock: When Jade uses shadow chains to pull several rioters into shadows, she leaves behind the one who angered her by assuming her to be "just a demon child". He faints by the force of her glare.
  • Fantastic Racism: Not only has Vera her well-established views on Mogriffs, but when asked what to do about Altaria's remaining Lurden comrade, she orders "it" to be killed, annoyed that the question needs to be posed at all. She also tries to kill Maya as soon as the latter reveals herself to be a shapeshifter.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Despite Jade and Metalbeak deciding to spare Vera from having a Leech Khan eat a part of her shadow, she repays their mercy by getting people killed in a Prison Riot in an effort to kill them both. When she's foiled, Jade's understandably not in a merciful mood anymore.
  • Flat "What":
    • Caroline has this reaction when Sofia states that once Alan and Philip's injuries are healed enough, she'll have them and Caroline as volunteers in the infirmary so that they won't have to spend the rest of their hostage period in dungeons.
    • One of the prisoners has this reaction when Vera lies that her fellow Sky Hunters surrendered cowardly.
  • Fully-Clothed Nudity: Both Tyrian and Rosetta are embarrassed when she sees him with only his underpants on.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: As Caroline tearfully blames herself for Maya getting injured by Vera, Sofia sternly tells her to pull herself together so that the young healer can help her rescue Maya.
  • Glad He's On Our Side: Well aware of Jade and her people's might, the Phobos loyalists are intent on following Raythor and Phobos' order to keep Jade alive at any cost so that the entire Meridian wouldn't get slaughtered by the Shadowkhan.
  • Groin Attack: One prisoner is kicked between his legs by another prisoner when she mistakenly thinks he intentionally touched her butt.
  • The Guards Must Be Crazy: The guard Olmo falls for Vera's Sick Captive Scam when he checks on her alone, leading to her escaping and starting the Prison Riot that costs many lives.
  • Hand Behind Head:
    • Tyrian does this when he's relieved Rosetta found his scroll.
    • Caroline also does this when she asks where she's going to sleep.
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear: Tyrian tries to cover himself with a pillow when Rosetta sees him in his underpants.
  • Hates Their Parent: Vera's revealed to have issues with her mother who never tried to avenge her grandfather, which is why Tinsley is unable to convince Vera to stop her rampage by asking if she's ready to risk her mother to the Shadow Realm's wrath.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Rosetta is flustered when Tyrian calls her beautiful and claims many girls are prettier than her.
  • Ignored Epiphany: After convincing the prisoners to take over the fortress, Vera briefly feels guilty about duping loyal soldiers before reassuring herself that getting Meridian rid of evil will make up for it.
  • I Have a Family: Upon being confirmed that they're facing residents of the Land of Eternal Shadows, Rolf cries out that he can't die since he has back home a girl pregnant with his child.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: When Altaria is overwhelmed by the prisoners, one of them shows lustful intentions towards her, but Vera's order to finish the takeover of Snowpoint prevents him from going through with them.
  • Impromptu Tracheotomy: Some of the Ninja Khan incapacitate several prisoners by throwing shuriken at their necks, while Rita's companion gets his neck slashed by a sword.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: The guard accompanying Caroline and Maya knows he can't win against a squad of escaped prisoners, so he acts like he's putting his weapon down while reaching for the horn in his belt. Just as he grabs it and is about to blow in it though, Vera stops him.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: While telling the prisoners they could take Jade hostage, Vera actually refers to the girl with "her" before replacing the word with "it" as if she's correcting herself. She also tells the prisoners to "just kill it" when asked what to do with Altaria's remaining Lurden comrade.
  • It's All My Fault:
    • Philip regrets not giving enough weight for Amelia's suspicions regarding Vera's suicide mission and voting against continuing when the team debated on it and the decisive vote was on him, as it ultimately led to their current situation.
    • While explaining how Maya saved her from Vera and was injured, Caroline blames herself by claiming she wasn't careful enough. Sofia sternly tells her to stop practicing hindsight and focus on treating Maya's wounds.
  • I Was Just Joking: Alan makes a joke about the impossibility of him and the others escaping, but no-one laughs. He then has to clarify it was only a joke when Philip scolds him.
  • Kick the Dog: Vera jabs at Caroline's fear of being a disappointment to her mother when the timid girl refuses to help her assassinate Jade.
  • Kidnapped from Behind: Some of the prisoners are pulled into shadows by the Shadowkhan when their fellows aren't looking, leaving them unsettled when they realize there's less of them.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em:
    • Rolf and his companion lay down their weapons when the Shadowkhan show up at the infirmary.
    • When Jade effortlessly restrains about twenty prisoners in a moment, Vera — ironically enough — realizes for once that she has no chance against the blue girl and tries to flee.
  • Light Is Not Good: Tyrian's religion describes the Light of Meridian to be blinding her subjects and leading them to destruction like a torch attracts a moth that ends up being killed by the flame.
  • Loud Gulp:
    • Alan does this while facing Sofia's Tranquil Fury.
    • After a Ninja Khan causes one prisoner to anger his two female companions by touching their rears, the poor fellow has enough time to gulp before he's slapped in the face and kicked between the legs.
    • Caroline gulps several times during the confrontation with Vera.
    • Rolf's companion gulps when Philip confirms that the talk about the Shadow Realm is true.
    • Vera herself gulps when Jade is about to find her hiding.
  • Mama Bear: After Maya is injured, Sofia puts all her focus on treating her by restraining Rolf and his companion so that the Shadowkhan will leave the infirmary and strictly telling Caroline to cease her self-reproaching and use her healing gifts to help her save Maya.
  • Military Maverick: Tyrian's position as one is lampshaded when Maya expresses surprise over the fact that between Tyrian and the Frostbiter, Alan's in better condition than Philip. Alan admits the mad soldier gave him and the others quite a Curb-Stomp Battle in Chapter 26, and Maya tells it's rumored that Tyrian's insanity is the only reason he isn't ranked higher or a member of Phobos' elite.
  • Morality Chain Beyond the Grave: Tinsley tries to invoke this by telling Vera she doubts the latter's grandfather would want her to lead the prisoners to be slaughtered and potentially doom all of Meridian, but Vera just tells Tinsley she didn't know her grandfather.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: Vathek reflects on everything he's learned and comes to the disturbing realization that many in the Rebellion may not have actually cared about the just nature of overthrowing Phobos and just saw it as means to pursue their own agendas.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Jade compares Vera's badly planned suicide mission to her own history of rushing to do things without taking enough time to think through the consequences, and she has no intention of taking that to the same levels as Vera.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Vera freezes in horror when Maya manages to sound the alarm. And when Jade, fully awake and in a bad mood, shows up and easily dispatches a group of rioters, Vera actually gets cold feet and tries to escape.
    • Vera's fellow rioters also recoil in fear when the Shadowkhan appear to subdue them.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Before Vera smashes the head of Olmo's partner against a wall, she tells him that Olmo's taking a nap and asks "Why don't you join him?".
  • Prison Riot: After escaping her solitary cell, Vera wants to have a distraction that'll help her assassinate Jade, so she frees the other prisoners and convinces them they can take over the fortress if they move quickly enough. Once Maya manages to raise the alarm, however, the roused garrison and the Shadowkhan patrolling outside quickly overwhelm the prisoners, ending the fight.
  • Properly Paranoid: After all the crap Vera has given them since capture, Jade and Ymir are concerned by how silent she's been since the duel with Metalbeak. Afraid she might be having suicidal thoughts after gambling everything away for nothing, they decide to have her checked on every now and then. It turns out Vera's actually biding her time to pull a Sick Captive Scam and escape to go after Metalbeak (and Jade as well) again.
  • Psychotic Smirk: When Vera rants that now the entire fortress knows what's happening, Caroline smiles dangerously and confirms that's exactly the case as the Shadowkhan appear right on cue.
  • Punctuated Pounding: After Caroline prevents Vera from killing Maya, the madwoman subjects her former friend to this while ranting that she won't let her stop her.
  • Quaking with Fear: When Rolf thinks about the beings of the Land of Eternal Shadows taking his soul, the blade in his hand shakes like crazy.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: The Phobos loyalists are right that it's in their best interests to ensure Jade stays alive, but they believe that if she dies, the entire Meridian will be subjected to her world's vengeance. The truth is that if she were to fall, the Shadowkhan would simply vanish without anyone to control them, and the balance of power would tip in favor of Phobos' enemies.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge:
    • Vera plans to assassinate Jade before going after Metalbeak again, and for that end, she initiates the Prison Riot as a distraction and even tries to kill Caroline for trying to stop her from killing Maya, no longer caring who she'll get killed to avenge her grandfather.
    • The Phobos loyalists, Vera's ex-friends and Vathek are against the idea of killing Jade because they're afraid the Shadowkhan will slaughter absolutely everyone on Meridian to avenge their queen.
  • Sacred Scripture: Tyrian possesses possibly the last remaining copy of his religion's sacred texts that were ordered to be destroyed when the cult was abolished.
  • Shirtless Scene: Tyrian has only his underpants on when Rosetta comes to see him, and she has to resist gazing on his toned and scarred body.
  • Sick Captive Scam: Vera escapes her cell by pretending to appear almost lifeless so that the guard checking her cell will enter to examine her, allowing her to get the jump on him.
  • A Simple Plan: Vera's entire plan after escaping is to assassinate Jade and use the ensuing chaos to sneak back into the Stone Nest and kill Metalbeak. She's foiled before she can even get to Jade.
  • Slain in Their Sleep: Vera initiates the Prison Riot in the middle of the night with the intention of assassinating Jade while she sleeps. The plan fails and the rioters are quickly subdued after Maya manages to wake up the entire fortress by using an alarm horn.
  • Slasher Smile: Vera gives several mad grins in anticipation of killing Jade and taking her revenge on Metalbeak.
  • Slut-Shaming: While fighting Altaria, Vera angers the soldier by accusing her of sharing her bed with Lurdens and other "freaks".
  • Spiteful Spit: When Vera describes Jade's appearance to the prisoners, a woman spits on the ground in revulsion.
  • Straight for the Commander: Vera plans to assassinate Jade under the belief the Shadowkhan will either fall into chaos or turn on the Phobos loyalists, enabling her to sneak back into the Stone Nest and finally kill Metalbeak. Her ex-friends and Phobos loyalists oppose the idea because they believe Jade's death would lead to her world attacking the entire Meridian in retaliation.
  • Super Window Jump: After realizing how out of her depth she is against Jade, Vera leaps out of a window to escape. She's surrounded by Samurai Khan almost as soon as she hits the ground, though.
  • Taking the Bullet: When Vera attempts to slash Caroline with a sword, Maya takes the strike and gets a bleeding gash on her back.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • As Jade gets ready to sleep, she says that with some luck, there won't be more dramas. Vera proves her wrong later that night.
    • When Altaria's captain suspects something's happening and goes to check the prison, he turns down her suggestion of alerting the Shadowkhan, confident they won't be needed for this. He and the three soldiers accompanying him are likely killed by the escaped prisoners.
  • Thwarted Coup de Grâce: When Vera is about to kill Maya, Caroline tackles her former friend in fury.
  • Tranquil Fury: When Alan presses Sofia's Berserk Button, she calmly speaks in a sweet tone and asks if he'll stay in his bed without any "measures" from her part. Alan honestly wonders if he'd be better off with Tyrian or the Frostbiter.
  • Underestimating Badassery: When Jade appears before a group of rioters who haven't seen her before, they believe her to be just a demonic child and discuss about killing her or taking her hostage to secure their escape before she conjures shadow chains that drag them away.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Vera tries to prey on Caroline's insecurities by saying that if she helps kill Jade and enables pushing the enemy away from the mountains, it will make Caroline's mother proud of her. When Caroline refuses to help, Vera spitefully calls her a disappointment to her mother, earning a flinch from the girl.
  • Woken Up at an Ungodly Hour: Jade is in a bad mood for having her beauty sleep ruined because of the riot.
  • Would Not Shoot a Civilian: Barnabas and Rolf tell their fellow rioters not to hurt Sofia and Maya because they see no honor in attacking who they believe to be defenseless healers.
  • You Have to Believe Me!: Both Tinsley and Caroline try to warn the escaped rebel soldiers that it's suicide trying to take over the fortress while the Shadowkhan and their queen are present. Taking advantage of the prisoners' ignorance and her own charisma, Vera quickly lies that Tinsley and Caroline have been driven hysterical by enemy propaganda.
  • You're Insane!: Vera is again on the receiving end of this line, not only from her ex-friends, but also Altaria and Maya for her Detrimental Determination and ignoring the possible repercussions of murdering Jade.
