Recap / Shadows over Meridian, Chapter 16: The north march

Go To

While Frost marches towards Cavigor, Jade starts the conquest of the mountainous north by marching her army to the fortress of Snowpoint and gets to know some Phobos loyalists under her command, beginning the Snowpoint arc.

  • Ascended Extra: The Mogriffs' Mook Lieutenant from Chapter 9 turns out to be one of the five Mogriffs who impersonated the Guardians to fool Elyon on Phobos' orders, more specifically the one who assumed Will's appearance. Her name is revealed to be Windblade.
  • Batman Gambit: The marching Phobos loyalists are positioned in the middle of the troops of Mantis Khan on Ymir's suggestion so that any reports reaching Elyon will focus on the Shadowkhan and make her decide to try her luck with Frost's army in the south rather than that of Jade.
  • Call-Back: Windblade is the Mogriff who impersonated Will in the first season episode "The Mogriffs", and she continues taking on the Keeper's appearance when she needs to communicate with non-Mogriffs.
  • Cliffhanger: Finding the rebel army on the verge of overwhelming Snowpoint's garrison, Jade and her army charge.
  • Death Mountain: As the army makes its way through the mountain range, Jade compliments the Mogriffs' ancestors for choosing such a protective environment to settle in, for dangerous ledges, huge cliffs, vertical climbs, deep canyons and chasms ensure no ordinary army could pass the dangerous area that's easy to get lost in. It's thanks to the flying skills of the Mogriffs and shadow serpent mounts as well as the Mantis Khan's Wall Crawl ability that Jade's army is able to reach Snowpoint in just a day and a half.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Tyrian (though his name isn't revealed until the next chapter) makes his first appearance by eagerly jumping with mad laughter on the back of one of the shadow serpents he names as "Shadow Striker", eager to bring death to the rebels. The snake eventually takes the man in its mouth, but instead of being scared, he laughs and approves of the snake seemingly knowing what to do with the rebels. When the army reaches Snowpoint and the "snake riders" charge to reinforce the fortress, Tyrian is still in Shadow Striker's mouth while urging his steed to hurry before they miss their chance to bring terror to the rebels. These antics are already baffling and embarrassing Ymir, Jade and the others.
  • Facepalm: Captain Ymir has this reaction when the mad soldier Tyrian gets himself in a shadow serpent's mouth.
  • Glad He's On Our Side: While surveing the Mantis Khan army Jade summons in a mere moment, Ymir is thankful they're sided with Phobos and actually pities the rebels for a fleeting moment.
  • Hand Behind Head: Jade scratches her head when she realizes to her embarrassment that she doesn't know Windblade's name.
  • Horse of a Different Color: Not only is Jade riding a giant shadow serpent, but she summons dozens of more of them so that Phobos' soldiers can use them to fly over the mountainous terrain and ride them into battle.
  • Loud Gulp: Ymir does this twice, first when politely turning down Jade's suggestion to have the Bat Khan carry the soldiers over the mountains, and secondly upon seeing the army of Mantis Khan.
  • Mook Lieutenant: The Phobos loyalists under Jade's command are led by Captain Ymir and the Mogriffs by Windblade, both of whom were present in the conference of Chapter 9.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: When Jade is impressed by Windblade's name, the moved Mogriff explains that she's named after a great Mogriff hero who led the defense of their home nest-fortress centuries ago when the past queens tried to exterminate them and was one of those who sacrificed their lives to give their children time to escape.
  • Seen It All: When Ymir admits that he's still finding it hard to believe he's working alongside entities of the Land of Eternal Shadows, Jade states it's tame when compared to all the things she's seen. However, none of her experience has prepared her for Tyrian's antics, and she eventually decides he's probably one of the weirdest things she has ever seen.
  • The Silent Bob: Discussed. When Ymir brings up the silence of the Shadowkhan, Jade assures that though they don't talk, communication with them is not that hard since they can deliver messages. She also adds conspiratorially that it may be that others don’t understand what they are "saying"; she knows they communicate nonverbally with each other, and she can understand them as if they were talking directly to her mind/heart.
  • Starfish Language: The Mogriffs' natural language seems to be composed of growls, roars and shrieks, for Windblade uses those to tell her name without realizing Jade won't understand their meaning.
  • Sweat Drop: Ymir is narrated to have this reaction when Windblade tells Jade her name by screeching and growling. The same happens with all three of them when they see Tyrian laughing at having half his body in the mouth of Shadow Striker.
  • Wall Crawl: The Mantis Khan are revealed to be capable of easily crossing mountainous terrain by using their insectoid legs to climb even vertical mountainsides.
