Tropes:

  • Batman Gambit: When Iris captures and tortures the now powerless Magnus into revealing Madzie's whereabouts, she receives a fire message from Catarina, her current guardian, agreeing to give her back. Magnus is stunned when noticing her handwriting, but it turns out to be a ploy to recapture Iris and send her back to the Clave.
  • The Bus Came Back: Maia returns to New York after being absent for the other two episodes.
  • Consulting a Convicted Killer: Simon turns to Raphael, who's been in Phoenix doing community service ever since he was banished by Isabelle, in order to figure out how to get rid of his mark.
  • Dramatic Irony: Consul Penhallow is unaware of the undeground tortures on Downworlders, as Isabelle questions her about it and she truthfully denies it.
  • It's All My Fault: Simon and Jace beat themselves up for Clary's supposed death. Jace is still haunted by memories of the Owl and Simon refuses to come out of his apartment out of fear of hurting anyone with the Mark of Cain.
    • Raphael also expresses his remorse for having brought Heidi back to life for his own selfish purposes and let her tear Simon's family apart.
  • Put on a Bus: Sometime after Ollie was released from Lilith's control, she and Sam were mentioned by Luke to have been relocated by the Praetor Lupus and gave them new identities to keep them safe.
    • This is Consul Penhallow's final appearance and she is only mentioned throughout the rest of the episodes.
  • Synchronization: Ater his resurrection, Jonathan is bonded to Clary this way; any injuries inflicted on him are also inflicted on her. Clary is shocked to realize this after she attempted to kill Jonathan, making his taking down harder than it already is.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Isabelle initially admonishes Maia for leaving the city, with Simon having to deal with the fallout of his family being torn apart by Heidi alone, but is quickly understading when she explains the reason why she had to as Isabelle relates to said experience.
