Go To

Maeve discovers that Jackson impregnated her. She decides to get an abortion, but is accosted by two pro-life picketers. Otis holds them off while Maeve goes through the procedure, where she meets a woman who is also terminating a pregnancy.

Eric joins the swing band, where he meets Lily. Lily propositions Eric for sex, completely unaware he's gay.

Jackson wins a swimming competition, but not only was Maeve not there to cheer him on, but his mother immediately tells him he needs to try harder despite breaking his own record. Headmaster Groff warmly congratulates Jackson, which his son Adam watches with envy.

Tropes

  • Fanservice: Lily bares her breasts.
  • Good Girls Avoid Abortion: Zigzagged. While Maeve and the other woman at the clinic aren't role models by any means, they aren't vilified for having abortions. The character flaws are intended to humanise them rather than vilify them.
  • Grey-and-Gray Morality: The topic of abortion is shown to be a complicated one. Maeve's decision to terminate her unplanned pregnancy is shown to weigh on her conscience, even though as a dirt-poor teenage girl it's pretty much the better decision for her.
  • Hypocrite: The anti-abortion protester holds a grudge against her boyfriend and fellow protester because he committed the sin of having sex before they met, but when Otis suggests that the reason for her anger might be that she is afraid that by the time they get married he will be more experienced than she is, she openly admits that she has in fact had EVERY kind of heterosexual sex except vaginal. While it may be true that she is still a virgin, the idea that this makes her innocent of any sin while her boyfriend is not is so absurd that Otis clearly has to work very hard not to call her out on it.
  • Moral Guardians: Maeve and Otis have to deal with a pair of anti-abortion protesters. While the episode favours a woman's right to get an abortion, it doesn't turn the opponents into unlikable strawmen.
  • No Social Skills: Lily somehow didn't realise that Eric is gay despite his camp mannerisms. She even suggests that Eric pretend she's a boy while they have sex.
  • Vicariously Ambitious: Jackson's mother isn't the least bit impressed by his current swim record, telling him to break that one despite it being his utmost limit.
