<<< Previous - Next >>>

Wolfgang visits the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe to think. Sun reluctantly signs the papers that will free her, knowing the consequences for her brother. Steiner threatens he will have Felix killed if Wolfgang does not hand over the diamonds. Jonas and Will visit, and Jonas explains sensates have existed since the beginning of humankind. He also tells Will that Whispers will use Jonas to get to Will's cluster. Wolfgang meets Steiner to hand over the diamonds. As Steiner beats Wolfgang and prepares to kill him, Lito visits and concocts a story that distracts Steiner long enough for Wolfgang to reach a hidden gun. Wolfgang manages to kill Steiner and his men. Will and Riley visit, and she reveals to him Yrsa's warning about Jonas. Lito arrives at Joaquin's house to get back Daniela. Lito is beaten by Joaquin, but he eventually wins with the help of Daniela and Wolfgang. Lito and Daniela have a joyful reunion with Hernando. Riley goes to see her father play Beethoven's "Emperor Concerto". The music causes her to remember her birth. The rest join her and remember their births as well. Riley then remembers the birth (and subsequent death) of her daughter; she passes out, bleeding from the nose.

Tropes present in this episode:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Lito's birth flashback shows his whole family, including his mother, distracted by a telenovela during his delivery. In the present day Lito is seen laughing at the memory.
  • Birth-Death Juxtaposition: The montage of the Cluster remembering their births gives us two examples of this.
    • Sun was born in a cemetary when her mother went into labor while visiting a grave.
    • We get glimpses of Riley giving birth to her daughter right after her husband is killed in a car accident.
  • Born in an Elevator: Will was born in the back of his dad's squad car on the side of the road, indicating that his parents couldn't reach the hospital in time.
  • Delivery Guy: Several of the Cluster were delivered this way. Riley's birth was handled by Sven and his wife, Will was delivered by his father, Sun by the caretaker and visitors at the cemetary where her mother went into labor. Nomi and Wolfgang were apparently the only ones who were born in hospitals.
  • Discretion Shot: Averted during the birth montage which doesn't shy away from showing close-ups of the sensates crowning or Nomi being delivered via C-section.
  • Foreshadowing: Jonas mentions rather off-handedly that when he and the father of his cluster spoke about the nature of their species, he "told [Jonas] all sorts of bullshit about the psycellium", using the example that he could use it to feel the moment his cluster were physically born. At her father's concert, Riley does exactly this, remembering her own birth and allowing the rest of her cluster to relive theirs.
  • Mood Whiplash: The montage of the cluster remembering their births is mostly happy but Nomi's tense reaction to remembering her mother saying her deadname stands out, as does the final flashback of Riley remembering the traumatic events of her delivering her daughter.
  • Rule of Symbolism: In addition to being born at the same moment, Wolfgang and Kala's births are both strongly connected to water. Kala was born during heavy rain at the temple while Wolfgang's mother had a water birth.
  • Tears of Joy: Capheus has tears streaming down his face and a huge smile as he remembers his mother giving birth to him.
  • Three-Month-Old Newborn: Averted during the birth montage. All of the Sensates and Riley's baby are small, wrinkly and covered in body fluids. Most, if not all, of these scenes are footage of real births.
  • Title Drop: Said by Jonas to Will during their conversation at the museum.
