Recap / Seinfeld S3 E13 "The Subway"

Go To

Everyone has an uncommon experience while going their separate ways on the subway. Kramer overhears a horse racing tip from another passenger, places a bet at a betting parlour, and wins big, helping to pay for his car fines.

Tropes:

  • Big Damn Heroes: The undercover cop who saves Kramer from the mugger.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Kramer meets and gives money to a blind violinist on the subway. Later he gets a hot tip on a horse race, bets on it, and wins a large sum of C-notes which a thug hunts him down for. In the course of fleeing from the guy, he crashes into the same violinist, who turns out to be an undercover cop who arrests the thug.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: George puts going to his job interview on hold to chase after an attractive woman and it costs him big, as she leaves him handcuffed and robbed, thus causing him to miss the entire interview.
  • For the Evulz: The woman who robbed George, although it was worth it to hear George say "Will I see you again?"
  • Inner Monologue: Elaine has a rather lengthy one when the subway train grinds to a halt:
Elaine: (thinking) Oh, this is great. This is what I need, just what I need. Okay, take it easy, I'm sure it's nothing. Probably rats on the track, we're stopping for rats. God, it's so crowded. How can there be so many people? This guy really smells. Doesn't anyone use deodorant in the city? What is so hard, you take the cap off, you roll it on. What's that? I feel something rubbing against me. Disgusting animals, these people should be in a cage. We are in a cage. What if I miss the wedding? I got the ring. What'll they do? You can't get married without the ring. Oh, I can't breathe, I feel faint! Take it easy, it'll start moving soon. Think about the people in the concentration camps, what they went through. And hostages, what would you do if you were a hostage? Think about that. This is nothing. No, it's not nothing, it's something. It's a nightmare! Help me! Move it! Com'on move this (bleeping) thing!! Why isn't it moving?! What can go wrong with a train?! It's on tracks, there's no traffic! How can a train get stuck. Step on the gas! What could it be? You'd think the conductor would explain it to us! "I'm sorry there's a delay we'll be moving in 5 minutes!" I wanna hear a voice. What's that on my leg?!
    • George also has one when he contemplates how much clothing he should take off when the woman he was with said to make himself comfortable. He ends up taking off just his shoes.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kramer's reaction when he sees that the rough-looking guy who was watching him in the betting hall has followed him into the subway, intent on robbing him of his winnings.
  • Precision F-Strike: In the outtakes:
Jerry: So you missed the wedding. You'll catch the bris!
    Elaine: FUCK YOU.
    • Take two:
      Jerry: You'll catch the bris!
Elaine: Why don't you just shut the fuck up for a change? (Julia laughs)
  • Undercover Cop Reveal: Just as it appears Kramer's goose is cooked as his pursuer catches up with him, places him in a chokehold, and demands his money, we hear a shout of "FREEZE! POLICE!" as the blind violinist from earlier draws his gun and flashes his badge.
