Recap / Seinfeld S2 E3 "The Jacket"

Go To

Jerry buys a very expensive suede jacket, which he wears to meet Elaine's intimidating father.

Tropes:

  • Daddy's Girl: Alton Benes is gruff and mean-spirited, but he genuinely loves Elaine and lights up with a warm smile when she finally arrives. Elaine similarly loves her dad and doesn't comment on his harshness.
  • Dad the Veteran: Elaine's father is a veteran of the Korean conflict.
  • Doomed New Clothes: Turns out snow really isn't good for suede.
  • Ear Worm: George saw Les Misérables and can't get "Master of the House" out of his head.
Jerry: You know, Schumann went mad from that.
  • Grumpy Old Man: Alton Benes. Portrayed by Lawrence Tierney.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Heterosexual Today?: George has to preface his compliment by pointing out he's not the least bit gay. Although Elaine's father thinks he is.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Elaine tells Jerry that her father thinks George is gay. Jerry assumes it was because George was singing showtunes all night, but Elaine clarifies that no, he thinks that about pretty much everyone he meets.
  • Senior Creep: Alton Benes. To the point both George and Jerry contemplate outright ditching.
George: We can't possibly have dinner with him alone!
Jerry: How are we going to get out of this?
George: We say we're frightened and have to go home!
  • Space Clothes: Referenced during Jerry's opening act. Every movie he's seen about the future or space seems to have a similar outfit, rendering fashion irrelevant.
  • Undisclosed Funds: Jerry spent a lot of money on the jacket. The mystery of the exact amount (that it's over $300 is as much as Jerry is willing to admit) is a Running Gag over the course of the episode. At one point George tries to guess and throws out progressively larger sums, with Jerry's refusal to correct him on any of them driving him increasingly wild with curiosity as to how much he paid.
Jerry: (after Elaine has checked the tag) Bad? Very bad?
    Elaine: You have no idea.
    Jerry: I have some idea.
    Elaine: No idea.
    Jerry: I've got a ballpark.
Elaine: There is no park and the team has relocated.
