“You know Sonic the Hedgehog?”
Scott Pilgrim, a 23-year-old Canadian slacker and musician, has a chance encounter with Ramona Flowers, a mysterious American delivery girl he’s seen rollerblading through his dreams. He asks her out on a date, but the fact that he is dating a high schooler and the fact that she has seven evil exes could pose a problem…
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Gideon appears early this time around, briefing Matthew on Scott.
  • Adapted Out:
    • Michael Comeau is not seen at the party, instead Scott sees Ramona moments after walking in. He will continue to be a no-show throughout the season, outside of a brief background cameo, with Julie seemingly inheriting his role as "the one who knows everyone".
    • Crash and the Boys don't even show up at the Rockit.
  • Company Cameo: Ramona now works as a delivery person for Netflix, not Amazon. Scott is also shown browsing the old Netflix website.
  • Compressed Adaptation: The episode is essentially a somewhat truncated version of the first book in the series… until the end.
  • Establishing Series Moment: The episode plays out in the same way as the comic, with Matthew Patel crashing through the concert walls and forcing Scott to block his attack. However, Scott is suddenly killed by Matthew at the end of the episode, revealing that the series will not be a shot-for-shot adaptation of the comics.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even Matthew is baffled by Scott dating a teenage girl, while dating Ramona at the same time.
Matthew: Wow. And I thought we were evil.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall:
    • Scott attempts to break the ice with Ramona by discussing two different Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons and how Sonic's voice actor was the same across both series. Similar to how his voice actor previously played him in the movie.
    • Every one is shocked and confused when Scott is apparently killed by Matthew (including the announcer who gives out a puzzled "KO???"), as if they knew that Scott was supposed to beat him, as he did in both the books and the movie. Even Matthew himself seems surprised he won.
  • Not What It Looks Like: From the way Scott describes his living situation (mooching off of his cool gay roommate Wallace), Ramona sums it up as Wallace being his sugar daddy. Scott is too dumb to debate it since he doesn't know what a sugar daddy is.
  • Title Drop: After briefing Matthew on Scott, Gideon declares Scott will soon say goodbye to his precious little life.
  • Wham Episode: Scott is apparently killed at the end of his fight with Matthew - a MASSIVE departure from the books and movie.
