Recap / Scooby Doo Mystery Inc S 1 E 15 The Wild Brood

Go To

A group of Orc Bikers calling themselves The Wild Brood have rode into town and the citizens of Crystal Cove are suspicious and hostile while Daphne dates their leader, Odnarb, after being ignored by Fred. But when an impostor Orc Biker breaks into a top secret area it's up to Mystery Inc to clear their names.

The episode provides examples of:

  • 2D Visuals, 3D Effects: The train, all of which makes the scene more similar to Anastasia.
  • Badass Bookworm: The Wild Brood are actually Video Game programmers.
  • Breather Episode: While the appearance of one of Mr. E's messages happens half-way through the episode to help Velma do some hacking, it's a largely standalone episode which focuses more on the gang's relationship.
  • Call-Back: The Tiki Lounge from "Battle of the Humungonauts" returns and is mentioned as having been rebuilt.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Mr. Chen is briefly introduced here before becoming an important character in "The Dragon's Secret."
  • Clear My Name: The Wild Brood are not responsible for breaking into the military base, but are thrown in jail for it eventually on trivial charges (which get revoked once they find the real thief).
  • Create Your Own Villain: The Wild Brood's shunning of Maxwell caused him to make his own Orc Biker costume and destroy the system prototype for revenge in a plot that is very complex.
  • Damsel in Distress: Velma, though in this case it's so she'll reroute the train for The Fake Orc Biker while he threatens Scooby to get her to comply and she escapes.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The geeks pretending to get lost in their own persona's of biker orcs to let off steam is not that dissimilar to those who Cosplay, or even be a part of the Furry Fandom.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Velma may not be happy about losing Shaggy to Scooby, but she wouldn't go so far as to let Scooby be killed just to get Shaggy back. When Maxwell threatens Scooby's life, she immediately complies with his demands, though she does mention the irony of the situation.
  • Expressive Mask: The rubber orc masks worn by the Wild Brood and the Fake Orc Biker. Also Latex Perfection as they come off really easily, yet conform to each of their faces.
  • Expy: Odnarb is one for Marlon Brando in The Wild One.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Somehow Shaggy, Daphne, Fred, and the entirety of the Wild Brood gang fail to notice Velma and Scooby getting grabbed and kidnapped less than ten feet away from them in a well-lit tea shop.
  • Fanservice: When the gang enter in her room, Daphne wears a very short and revealing nightgown.
  • Fantastic Racism: Against the Wild Brood, barring Daphne and Velma who went out with the bikers to make Fred and Shaggy jealous, saw they were perfectly nice and were with them when the fake biker committed his crime, though the brunt of it comes from Sheriff Stone and Fred. Though Sheriff Stone is actually more terrified of their true nerd forms and actually has them keep the masks on as a result.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Fred was actually willing to let Daphne go off with Odnarb, but she really loved Fred the whole time or as he put it...
Fred: She digs ME! She digs me!
  • Leet Lingo: The code the Shadowy Orc uses to disable the security cameras of the military base is B055. note
  • Monster of the Week: The Shadowy Orc, a mysterious Wild Brood imposter trying to frame the biker gang for stealing a rocket launcher from the Crystal Cove armory.
  • Nice Guy: Odnarb. Besides him and the gang throwing other bikers out of their bar in the opening (and even then, they didn't start the fight immediately). He treats everyone politely and with respect, even when being insulted to his face. He only ever shows anger on two occasions: glaring when Fred gets in his face regarding Daphne, and when fighting the imposter orc biker. He's even smiling when Fred rubs it in his face at the end about Daphne choosing him over Odnarb and lets him have his victory. That said, he was shunning Maxwell, to an extent that seemed like bullying in the flashback, so it's perhaps his persona that's nice rather than Odnarb.
  • Noble Demon: The Wild Brood. It helps that underneath it they're a group of nerds.
  • Operation: Jealousy: The real reason Daphne went with Odnarb.
  • The Password Is Always "Swordfish": Literally, in this episode. The password is also the same name as a prototype games console.
  • Pet the Dog: While Velma is still mad at Scooby for the events of the previous episodes, when he's threatened she complies with their captor's demands and assures him that she would never do anything to harm him.
  • Runaway Train: The brakes fall off after the bridge is taken out, so they have to decouple the main car and let it fall while manually breaking the other carriages.
  • Sdrawkcab Name: The Wild Brood's names are all juvenile insults spelled backwards, save Odnarb, whose name is the inspiration for his character - Brando.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: The railroad bridge being destroyed, and the train wreck, complete with camera shake among impact.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Sheriff Stone attemps to storm out of Daphne's bedroom, but instead walks into her closet. Where he proceeds to get seriously lost.
  • Track Trouble: The Orc Biker steals a missile launcher from a military base and has Velma reroute the train carrying the video game console prototype so that it passes through Crystal Cove, and then jumps on board the train, knocks out the engineer and destroys a railroad bridge so the train will crash and destroy the console before it gets released. While he does succeed in wrecking the train and sending the Crystal Cove rail line out of service, the game console is saved when its' car is uncoupled from the rest of the runaway train.

Odnarb: We've got to get back to our render farm. But I was thinking... maybe one last ride? I'll let you hold onto my jacket. It's genuine elf thigh.
Daphne: Oh. No thanks, Od. You're awesome with all your deep thoughts and poetical nobility and stuff. But my heart has always been with Freddy.
<Kisses Fred on the cheek>
Fred: Yes! In your face, Odnarb, or whoever you are. She digs me. She digs me! SHE DIGS ME!
