Recap / Schitts Creek S 310 Sebastien Raine

Go To

Renowned New York-based photographer Sebastien Raine (Francois Arnaud) arrives in Schitt's Creek for a collaboration with Moira...but things get complicated since he's also David's ex. Johnny becomes suspicious of Bob's poker night. Alexis needs volunteer hours to graduate, so she tags along with Ted to the old folk's home.

Tropes:

  • Everyone Can See It: The old women at the nursing home are all very fond of Ted, and as resentful as they are for how Alexis hurt him, they all know he's still sweet on her.
  • Jerk with the Heart of a Jerk: Pretentious, predatory Sebastien is a jerk and stays that way.
  • Handsome Lech: Sebastien Raine uses his charm, good looks and sexual fluidity to manipulate and use people.
  • Mama Bear: Played with at the nursing home, where the old women are very fond (and protective) of Ted and are icy cold toward Alexis for what she did to him, with Dot in particular discreetly giving Alexis the middle finger.
  • New Old Flame: David clearly has unresolved feelings for Sebastien, which rise when the latter swings into town.
  • One-Shot Character: Sebastien, as one of the show's few true villains, certain makes an impression in this one episode, thanks in part to Arnaud's slippery charm in the role.
  • Revenge: Sebastien used and discarded David, and in this episode David has and enjoys his revenge.
  • Sesquipedalian Smith: Sebastien Raine, a sophisticated New York artist.
  • Shout-Out: Though David and Stevie agree he has a hot homeless look, Sebastien has a Perma-Stubble James Dean in a fluffy sweater vibe. He's young and pansexual, with a floofy pompadour.
  • The Tell: It turns out Bob isn't cheating at poker, nor is he particularly good at it — everyone else just has really obvious tells that give away how good or bad their hands are, and he's not sure if Roland even actually understands the rules.
  • Twist Ending: It looks like David is going to let Sebastien manipulate him, but it's revealed he was manipulating Sebastien.
  • Older and Wiser: Joan, one of the women at the nursing home, spells out for Alexis that Ted is still pining for her even after she has hurt him so badly and demands to know why she threw away such a good man.
  • Wicked Cultured: Sebastien is sophisticated and cultured, even to the point of affecting faux poverty with an expensive sweater that doesn't look expensive. He's everything David used to want to be, but he's a terrible person.
