Using a strange projector found in the basement of their building Sam and Max view the last adventure of their great grandfathers, Sameth and Maximus, as they become selected to find The Devil's Toybox, steal it, hopefully survive the train robbery then return the box. And then the ending shocks them both.

Tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Nefertiti the mole-girl has a thing for a pre-vampire Jurgen, and he does not reciprocate in the slightest.
  • Accidental Murder: How Sameth and Maximus die, thanks to Nefertiti trying to cast a protection spell on the Toybox.
  • Anachronic Order: Solving all the puzzles involves jumping back and forth between the first three reels to get information required to pass in previous reels (like learning the toy idea Sameth gives to the elves, or learning how to make Grandpa Mole angry enough to curse you with bad luck).
  • Anti-Climax: Maximus considers the confrontation with Baby Amelia Earhart, when Sameth ousts her with the Sexo Rejecto Hex, to be anticlimactic.
  • Astral Projection: The projector allows Sam and Max to project them selves into their ancestors.
  • Curse: Each member of the mole family has the ability to lay a different curse on people.
    • Benny has the "Sexo-Rejecto Hex", which causes the victim to (physically) repel any member of the opposite sex with their voice.
    • Benny's wife Natasha has a curse that makes the victim irresistible to vampires, increasing the odds that they'll be bitten and become one.
    • Benny's daughter Nefertiti has the "Holstein Hex", which turns the victim into a cow. Fortunately it only works temporarily.
    • The grandfather has the ability to curse victims with bad luck.
  • Don't Touch It, You Idiot!: Sam tries to keep Max from messing with the projector.
  • Four Is Death: Four films, and the last one ends with Sameth and Maximus dying.
  • Generation Xerox: Sameth and Maximus were best pals and a team duo, like their descendants. Unlike them, however, they weren't freelance police, but rather moochers sneaking into theaters and stealing ketchup packets.
  • Gotta Catch 'Em All: You can play the "The Big Reward" at any time, but you'll need to finish all of the other films to get past Papierweite's quiz.
  • Identical Grandson: Sam and Max look exactly like their great-grandfathers, except Sameth has a mustache and Maximus wear clothes.
  • The Many Deaths of You: There are a number of ways to get Sameth and Maximus killed, but that just forces you to start the puzzle over; only their canonical death in the fourth and final reel sticks. You actually get an achivement from the PS3 version for seeing all the ways the duo can die.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: After Sameth and Maximus witness an argument between mole people and Christmas elves.
Maximus: Why can't we all get along, Sameth?
Sameth: Because most of us are (bicycle horn), little buddy.
  • Romantic Vampire Boy: Discussed; if you have Sameth comment that being turned into a vampire should make Nefertiti give up on Jurgen, the latter replies that it just makes him "even more tragically sexy than before."
  • So Unfunny, It's Funny: The comic strips in the Egyptian newspaper are parodies of modern comics, but they all have the same punchline about cutting cucumbers lengthwise.
  • Wham Shot: Sam returns from the bathroom, and finds Max without his brain.
