I will survive. Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive.

“Poor Koan... She's been betrayed by the very person she loved. Now she no longer knows what to believe in anymore. And it's all because of you, Rubeus! I am Sailor Moon! And In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Usagi Tsukino

(DiC Episode: "Enemies No More")

Following Wiseman's prediction, Rubeus gives Koan one last mission to kill Chibi-Usa at the Hikawa Shrine. But Koan is about to learn what love really means to her...

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Age-Appropriate Angst: Koan is subtly stunned after Rei refers to her as "ma'am".
  • Ambiguous Situation: Wiseman states that the Hikawa Shrine was once a Crystal Point and Rubeus confirms that they contaminated the area with Dark Power. Did that mean that they were successful in destroying it's potential as a Crystal Point despite being defeated by the heroes? And in her upcoming debut, Esmeraude points out how Rubeus was unable to contaminate a single Crystal Point.
  • Ax-Crazy: Koan goes absolutely nuts after Rubeus's space-time bomb meant for her and the Sailor Guardians is destroyed.
  • Bastard Boyfriend: Despite not being an actual boyfriend, Rubeus suits the role as he first manipulates Koan with sweet words in order to get her to hunt the Rabbit at the shrine. Later he would crush her perfume gift on a whim while leaving her to kill herself after failing her mission.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Throughout this episode, Koan wants to get in Rubeus's good graces by trying to kill Chibi-Usa, even going as far as to put her life on the line. Unfortunately for Koan, Rei makes her realize Rubeus is not what he appears to be and the monster even turns her mission into a suicidal one.
  • Big Brother Is Watching You: Rubeus is keeping tabs on Koan by spying on her through her compact mirror and chastises her for taking the time to do her makeup.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Sailors Venus and Jupiter thwart Koan's suicide attempt by knocking Rubeus's space-time bomb into the sky and blowing it up.
  • Break Them by Talking: Rubeus gives a vicious wake up call to Koan by asserting that he never loved her and how she no longer has a place in the Black Moon Clan.
  • Call-Back:
  • Commonality Connection: Koan overhears Usagi's situation with how cold her old boyfriend is being to her which reminds her of her current relationship with Rubeus.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Koan is genuinely surprised that Yuichiro would endanger himself to protect someone constantly insulting him. She's also surprised to learn Rei is a Sailor Guardian.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Koan tries to roast Yuichiro alive not for interfering in her mission to catch Chibi-Usa, but for hitting her hair with a dirty broom.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Rei mistreats Yuichiro multiple times in the episode (yelling at him for not keeping up with her while carrying her pile of shopping items, chasing him with a broom at the temple, making him do chores despite his injuries) and it's all Played for Laughs.
  • Driven to Suicide: Koan is ordered to kill herself by Rubeus for failing to kill Chibi-Usa, but it fails due to the intervention of the other Sailor Guardians.
  • Flashback-Montage Realization: When Sailor Mars asks her to compare Rubeus's words with his actions, Koan thinks back to his behavior in this episode. It really rattles her, though she refuses to acknowledge what it really means.
  • Foil: Yuichiro to Koan. Both are constantly at the beckon call of others who mistreat them, but unlike Koan, Yuichiro has no delusions about who he pines for or the nature of their interactions. He puts up with Rei's bossy attitude because he wants to, not because he was tricked into it. Also, much as he wants Rei to love him back, he fully accepts that may never happen and can live with it, whereas Koan is enraged when warned about Rubeus's true character and crushed to be rejected by him.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Wiseman predicts that Koan will endure a great tragedy if she visits the Hikawa Shrine. And she does suffer one by the hands of her cruel-hearted crush Rubeus.
    • Koan receives a fortune stating that she'll receive great blessings. It comes true in the end when the Guardians promise her a second chance at life.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • As Koan angrily grabs her shopping bag from Yuichiro, a chibi version of Zoisite briefly appears.
    • One of the covers for Rei's manga features Sailor Moon and Chibi-Usa.
  • Happily Failed Suicide: Koan is stopped from activating the Space-Time Bomb that would kill everyone, including her, she gains a second chance of life and proves to be much happier than before.
  • Heroic Bystander: Yuichiro does his best to protect Chibi-Usa and Rei from the Young Specter Sister.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Rei has no problem badgering Yuichiro and ordering him around, but she tends to him after he's injured by Koan and (as Sailor Mars) tries to carry him to safety during the fight. Koan finds this apparent contradiction rather confusing.
  • Internal Reveal: Koan discovers Rei's secret identity as Sailor Mars.
  • Meaningful Echo: While visiting the Hikawa Shrine for her mission, Koan pretends to be a cosmetics sales lady. In the end, she's an official one and visits the Shrine to see her new friend Rei.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Koan becomes the first Spectre Sister to be abandoned by Rubeus, who has been using her as an Unwitting Pawn in his plans.
  • Nobody Touches the Hair: After Yuichiro uses his broom to whack Koan, the latter snaps at him for ruining her hair and attacks him.
  • Oblivious to His Own Description: Koan spends the whole episode insulting Yuichiro by calling him a pathetic loser for allowing himself to be abused and mistreated by Rei. Even going as far as to ask "why would you love someone who doesn't seem to care about you at all?" She says this without realizing her own situation with Rubeus.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • All Koan can do when Rubeus destroys her gift is watch on in shock as she begins to realize Rubeus is not what he appears to be.
    • Chibi-Usa's reaction at Koan swooping down to attack her at the Hikawa Shrine's entrance can only be described as horror. Rei and Yuichiro share this reaction.
    • Yuichiro is left mouth agape when Koan is about to burn him for messing up her hair with his broom.
    • Koan can only watch in shock upon realizing Rei's true identity as a Sailor Guardian. Seconds later, Koan gasps at the realization she's a goner the moment Rubeus turns on her for failing to kill Chibi-Usa. Rei also shares this reaction.
    • Rei and Usagi gasp in shock the moment Koan goes into Villainous Breakdown mode.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Rubeus gives Koan a particularly vicious one to demoralise her into becoming a suicide bomber.
Rubeus (DIC): Give me a break. You’re a loser. I have no interest in teaming up with a failure like you Catzi. Don’t bother coming back to headquarters. You’re no longer a member of my team.
Catzi: What? Rubeus, I know you can’t mean that after everything we’ve been through. The battles we’ve fought. We can beat these guys. Love conquers everything.
Rubeus: Yes, it’s true. Love is a very powerful thing, Catzi.
Catzi: Then you do care about me. You’ll join me, fight by my side.
Rubeus: I said “love is a very powerful thing”. That can be used to manipulate simps like you.
Catzi: You can’t mean that, I know. I’ve failed you, but I can do this if you believe in me. Tell me you believe in me.
Rubeus: Pah. This is world domination, not a popularity contest. Anyway you’ve been wearing so much perfume lately, I CAN’T STAND TO BE ANYWHERE NEAR YOU!! From now on, you’re on your own, Catzi.
  • Shadow Archetype: Rubeus and Koan serve as shadows to Rei and Yuichiro. The former represent what can happen if Rei's controlling attitude towards Yuichiro was portrayed more seriously and if she decided to exploit the street rat's devotion and affection to the point of jeopardizing his life without showing consideration for his well being.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Koan starts to panic when Sailor Mars points out how her relationship with Rubeus is devoid of true love along with questioning what his actions tell about his true character. She tells her to shut up as the truth is too much for her to bear.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Unlike the manga and Crystal, Koan undergoes a Heel–Face Turn and becomes a human thanks to Rei.
  • Taking the Bullet:
    • Yuichiro shields Rei from Koan's Dark Fire attack.
    • Once Koan enters Villainous Breakdown mode, Makoto tries kneeing her but Rei intervenes.
  • Villain Has a Point: To counter Rei's argument of how one should trust their boyfriend even after they begin to act cold or mean-spirited, Koan states that girls are better off forgetting about boyfriends who suddenly treat them like trash.
  • Villain Opening Scene: The episode starts with Wiseman warning Rubeus that his superior, Prince Demand, is losing patience with his failures. Additionally, he gives him a prediction about an upcoming Rabbit sighting.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After the Sailor Guardians continue to interfere with her Evil Plan and Rubeus abandons her, Koan ends up attacking the Guardians in a blind rage.
  • Wham Episode: Koan is the first member of the Black Moon Clan to repent for her crimes and turn good.
  • You Have Failed Me:
    • Wiseman urges Rubeus to finish his mission to kill Chibi-Usa or he will lose his position as a Black Moon Clan member.
    • At the end of this episode, Rubeus gives Koan a space-time bomb for failing to kill Chibi-Usa one too many times.
  • You Monster!: Rei calls Koan this for attacking Yuichiro.
