“Is love something that's fragile? Is love something that whithers? Is love something that can die? Can you not hear it? The sad voice crying for help. Please, give me the courage I need to protect the one I love!”
Usagi Tsukino

(DiC Episode: "Treed")

The aliens make their final stand against the Sailor Guardians after their identities have been exposed along with accepting that their love for Usagi and Mamoru will be unrequited. The fighting persists until the Makai Tree steps in and reveals her origins to everyone.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Acid Attack: The tree uses giant pods that spit acid at the Guardians as the navigate the building.
  • Act of True Love: Sailor Moon and Mamoru defending each other by taking An's blows manage to move Ail's heart.
  • Adam and Eve Plot: After learning of their origins and the mistakes that led to their people's demise, Ail and An decide to raise the reborn tree properly so they can recreate their race once again.
  • The Aloner: For eons, the Makai Tree existed by herself alone on an ocean planet. Til one day she decided she wanted someone to talk to.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: In order to convince her partner into attacking Usagi, An openly asks why Usagi would turn into Sailor Moon to stop him rather then be by his side if she truly cared about him. Ail returns the favor by asking An if Mamoru ever returned her affections by holding her hand or kissing her like sweethearts do.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": An yells "You shut up!" to the Moonlight Knight when he chastises her for her past misdeeds.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: The Makai Tree falls into this just like Ail and An. Despite wanting her creations to nurture her with natural love instead of stolen energy, she never once thinks to actually speak directly to them about her intentions or what she needs to survive. Especially since it was never established that there was a reason why she couldn't speak until recently. Not to mention she did try to attack the Sailor Guardians when they entered the ruined building despite Sailor Mars telling Venus to hold off on her attack.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Both aliens yell at the Makai Tree for not listening to their orders while completely forgetting about how essential it was to their genesis along with it's frightening power.
  • But Now I Must Go:
    • Now that Mamoru has regained his love for Usagi, the Moonlight Knight can return to him and restore his memories.
    • The aliens leave Earth so they can find a suitable planet to raise their new sapling.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: When working together, Ail and An manage to No-Sell Mars' Fire Soul Bird attack while completely demolishing the Guardians and cats.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: The Makai Tree reveals that once she lived a peaceful life alongside her alien race who loved and cherished. But soon greed grew in their hearts which led to ongoing violence and monstrous transformations that consumed her creations and destroyed her home planet. She would then wander the universe trying to find a suitable planet to live on. But there was no luck and the survivors who traveled with her began to die, leaving only Ail and An. This would even extend to them as they had no one to watch over them or teach them about true love, which would lead to them stealing from other life forms in order to survive and protect their tree.
  • Declaration of Protection: After taking a major attack to protect Mamoru, Sailor Moon declares that she's willing to give her life to protect the ones she loves.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: An ends up dying in the arms of Ail.
  • Disney Death: An dies after taking a deadly attack from her sacred tree. But she returns to life after the tree is purified by Moon Princess Halation.
  • Elevator Escape: The Guardians try to take the apartment's elevator to escape from some attacking roots. They ultimately resort to using the escape hatch to...well...escape.
  • Freudian Excuse: An furiously admits that she and Ail have spent their whole loves wandering the universe completely alone with no one to care for them.
  • Greed: The tree realized that her creations began to fight and harm one another over who deserved her energy more.
  • Happy Ending: The aliens will no longer attack Earth after learning the errors of their ways and have gone on to find a new planet to raise their sapling. Mamoru's memories have returned so he can confirm his love for Usagi. And she'll have her best friends by her side to support (and tease her) all the way.
  • Healing Hands: The Makai Tree asks Sailor Moon to purify her body and spirit so can be cleansed of the corrupt energy given to her.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The aliens repent for the crimes and after learning about true love from not only the Makai Tree but also Sailor Moon and Mamoru.
  • History Repeats: Just like their past incarnations, Usagi and Mamoru are levitated up in the air by a powerful force and try to reach other's hands.
  • If I Can't Have You…: Realizing that their human love interests will never return their love, the aliens order the Makai tree to steal not only their energy but every drop of energy on Earth.
  • In Medias Res: The episode picks up with the Sailor Guardians trying to enter the root infested apartment.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: An shields Ail from the Makai Tree's attack and gets mortally stabbed in the chest.
  • In Your Nature to Destroy Yourselves: Because of the ongoing greed developing in the hearts of the Makai race, they continued to hate and kill each other until the entire planet was wiped out.
  • The Maker: Wanting someone to talk to, the Makai Tree created her own race of Human Aliens and cared for every one of them.
  • Mental World: The Makai Tree transports the minds of everyone into her mindscape so she can share her origins.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Both Ail and An try to get the Makai Tree to drain the life energy of their romantic rivals.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Sailor Mars immediately senses a strange aura from the Makai Tree which hints to her that the tree is an intelligent being.
  • Oh, Crap!: Ail and An are left mouth agape when the Makai Tree goes berserk. Seconds later, Ail and the Sailor Guardians' reactions can only be described as horror at the realization that An's a goner.
  • Physical God: Ail and An's people were able to interact with the Makai Tree and worshipped and cared for her for all she's done.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Apparently the Makai Tree believed that making herself whither and decay would convince Ail and An that she needed love to thrive, rather than stolen energy. You'd think she would have tried talking to them directly about it given her immense power.
  • Raise Her Right This Time: Now that the Makai Tree has been reborn as a sapling, Ail and An decide to take her to a new planet and raise her properly with true love.
  • The Reveal: The Moonlight Knight explains that he's a Tulpa born from Mamoru's memories and desire to protect Sailor Moon.
  • Say My Name: Ail cries out his partner's name after she dies from her fatal wound.
  • Take My Hand!: Usagi tries to reach for Mamoru's hand when they're caught by the tree's vines. Though Ail steps in to kick them apart.
  • Taking the Bullet:
    • Sailor Moon stands in front of An's energy attack to protect Mamoru. Later Mamoru would return the favor by shielding her.
    • Then when the Makai Tree begins to attack with it's giant roots, An takes a devasting blow that was meant for Ail.
  • Tears of Remorse: An sheds these when she realizes that she and Ail were wrong with how they stole love.
  • That Makes Me Feel Angry: An is furious that Ail has romantic feelings for Usagi.
  • This Cannot Be!: An states this when Ail claims that Mamoru never had romantic feelings for her.
  • The Unmasking: The Moonlight Knight removes his cloth mask to Sailor Moon, revealing himself as another version of Mamoru.
  • Vine Tentacles: The tree also uses it's large roots as vine whips to attack.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: As Sailor Moon encourages Mamoru to remember his true memories, An intervenes and attacks them with deadly force.
