Usagi struggles to warn Naru that her crush is an enemy from the Dark Kingdom who only wants to exploit her. But she may be too late as Nephrite convinces the poor girl to help him obtain the Silver Crystal.


Tropes in this episode include:

  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Naru declares to the world that she loves Masato/Nephrite with all her heart and she'd sooner die then let anything bad happen to him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Mars and Mercury show up to provide backup for Sailor Moon as she suffers Nephrite's full wrath.
  • Big Eater: Usagi orders a ton of food to celebrate her gaining the confidence and wisdom to help her friend.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Usagi boasts to Naru that she has "dibs" on both Motoki and Tuxedo Mask as potential crushes. Later she shows concern when she sees Motoki helping a girl customer with a video game.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Both Rei and Mamoru are insistent with Naru being fully informed about the true colors of her crush. Even if she's heartbroken, she'll at least be safe from anything harmful that the man in question would try to do to her.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: As the Dark Crystal reacts brilliantly to Naru's Anguished Declaration of Love, Nephrite comes to understand the true power of human love.
  • The Gloves Come Off: Nephrite unleashes his destructive star power on Sailor Moon after the Pretty Guardian exposes him in front of Naru.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Driven to a corner by making Queen Beryl temperamental with his actions, Nephrite uses the power of the stars to the create the Dark Crystal in order to find the Legendary Silver Crystal.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Rei insists on telling Naru the truth about her crush with little concern over how she'd react to such devastating news.
  • Inside Job: Naru breaks into her family's jewelry store hoping to give what she believes is the Silver Crystal to Masato.
  • Internal Reveal: Nephrite tells the Guardians that he and the Dark Kingdom are after the Silver Crystal.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": The Sailor Guardians all get this when they see Naru throw herself in front of Moon Tiara Action.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: Along with Zoisite expressing sadistic delight in Nephrite being thrown into the lion's den after angering their queen, Nephrite proclaims that he's going to retrieve the Silver Crystal even though that's Zoisite's mission.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Usagi is horrified to learn that Naru is enamored with Masato Sanjon a.k.a. Nephrite.
    • As Sailor Moon, she gets one when Nephrite uses his power to protect Naru from Yasha.
  • Opportunistic Bastard: Kunzite reminds Zoisite that in the event Nephrite does succeed in finding the Silver Crystal, they can simply kill him and claim it for themselves.
  • The Pardon: Nephrite insists that by finding the Silver Crystal, he'll be pardoned by Queen Beryl for his failures and past behavior.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Usagi gains the courage to warn Naru that Masato Sanjoin is an evil man and that she should stay away from him. But as Luna points out, she didn't stick around to properly explain her reasonings and ensure that Naru understood and accepted her declaration.
  • The Power of Love: Naru's pure romantic feelings for Nephrite prove to be so strong that it attracts the attention of his Dark Crystal.
  • Precocious Crush: Naru admits to being in love with an adult man.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Infuriated by her minion's refusal to answer along wit his string of failures, Queen Beryl decides to eradicate Nephrite.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Yasha declares that members of the Dark Kingdom who protect humans are traitors to their kind and must die.
  • Rule of Symbolism: As Nephrite weaves a false story of him being targeted by bad men to Naru, the scene shifts to moths being attracted to a city light. When Naru falls for his trap and leaves to steal her mother's crystal, one of the moths gets too close and catches on fire.
  • Pet the Dog: Along with "protecting" Naru from the Demonic Youma Yasha, Nephrite also returns the crystal Naru stole from her mother's store.
  • Taking the Bullet: To everyone's stupefaction, Naru throws herself in front of Nephrite ready to defend him from Moon Tiara Action. Even the villain is amazed by her dedication.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Ms. Osaka becomes rightfully concerned when her daughter leaves home to see a grown man and then resorts to stealing from her jewelry store without explaining what is she doing.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Despite Sailor Moon saving his life, Nephrite is still evil and proclaims that the Dark Kingdom will triumph over them.
  • Villainous Rescue: Nephrite uses his Starlight attacks on Yasha to keep her from harming Naru.
  • White Mask of Doom: Yasha starts out wearing a white mask modeled after a smiling woman.
  • Wish Upon a Shooting Star: The last scene of the episode has Sailor Moon wishing for Nephrite to stop being evil if he does in fact care for Naru.
  • Youkai: The Monster of the Week is Yasha, a dark haired ghost woman who's mask hides a demonic other self.
