Go To

"The New Year's Clean Up" contains examples of:

  • Exact Words: The rat tries to invoke this when Sagwa tells him he can only help himself to one dumpling. She's not impressed with this excuse.
Rat: I only had one. I just had to find the best one, that's all.
  • Foil: Both Sagwa and the Rat were thinking of themselves when they started their little partnership (Sagwa wanted attention, the Rat wanted food and shelter). However, while the Rat doesn't own up to how he ate all the dumplings and (nearly) ruined the New Years Eve banquet, Sagwa finds it in herself to responsibly admit her ulterior motive had consequences, and chase the Rat out for good.
  • Get Out!: Sagwa said this to the rat while chasing him out for tricking her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: The rat. He already had a good thing with Sagwa, working together as a partner while he got to stay on in the palace. But in the second half of the episode, he throws it all away when he breaks his promise to Sagwa to only have one dumpling, and nibbles all the dumplings.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Sagwa gives one to the rat for ruining the Magistrate's New Years banquet.
Sagwa: (walks towards the rat) You said one dumpling, not all of them!
Rat: I only had one. I just have to find the best one that's all!
Sagwa: I should've never trusted you! You've ruined the Magistrate's New Years Eve banquet! Get out of here!
Rat: Don't worry about it. It's not like there won't be another New Years Eve. We've got a great thing going here.
Sagwa: I want you out of the palace NOW! You've tricked and used me to get into the food!
Rat: Hey, you went along with it. You're the one who looked like a great cat catcher.
Sagwa: Yeah, well, maybe I was too worried about that!
    Rat: What do you mean?
Sagwa: All I've been thinking is making myself good, and you've just made things worse for everyone else! I don't wanna play this game anymore!
Rat: Can we talk about it?
Sagwa: (chases the rat out of the palace) NO! OUT!
  • Secretly Selfish: When Sagwa calls out the Rat for how he almost ruined the New Years Eve dinner by nibbling all the dumplings, the Rat tries to guilt-trip how their scam was her idea and she's just as guilty for wanting to look good. To this, Sagwa accepts that she did make everybody into thinking she was a phenominal rat catcher because she wanted to look good. But now that she's realized the error of her ways, the Rat has no leg to stand on.
