Recap / SMG4 - The Tari Abnormality

Go To

Mario's discovered Tari's secret ability...
This episode serves as a tie-in to the debut of Meta Runner.

While playing a game of Super Smash-each-other-in-the-ass Brothers, Mario starts to think Tari's cyborg arm is helping her win. Thanks to Mario's antics, both he and Tari are trapped within their game!

  • Anti-Villain: Mango doesn't want to fight people. He's tortured by the blood he tastes with every meal, and he was programmed with no family or friends.
  • Bait-and-Switch: In the end, Mario and Tari decide to play a more relaxing game—Dark Souls, a game where you fight dragons. And that's more relaxing than basically Super Smash Bros.?
  • Bland-Name Product: Super Smash Each Other in the Ass Bros. is back—and is now apparently explorable.
  • Book Ends:
    • The episode starts with Mario and Tari playing video games together. They resume playing video games as soon as they get home.
    • Mango is the first and final boss of Mario and Tari's video game adventure.
  • Boss Subtitles: Each fighter has them.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • As Mario explains that he's been in video games before, a flashback montage shows his past adventures in various "If Mario Was In..." videos.
    • We hear nerdy hyperventilating as Bingus & Dingus are approaching—nerdy hyperventilating that brings Francis to mind.
    • Kek uses the King Koopa model that was last seen in "The Super Mario Stupid Show".
    • Tari apparently finding fighting dragons relaxing is a joke that carries over from "There's Something Up With Meggy".
  • Dual Boss: Bingus & Dingus, which is immediately followed by Kek & Cringe.
  • Enemy Scan: On at least two occasions, Tari's cybernetics allow her to do this when fighting opponents.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Bingus is happy to be talking to his "mother" again. Subverted when he runs away to get out of cleaning his room.
  • Evil Counterpart: All of the opponents Mario and Tari face are bootleg versions of their friends in the real world.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: Mango is on the receiving end by who else but Mario.
  • King Mook: Todd, with some shades of Mook Maker.
  • Narcissist: Of course Mario would find someone in his likeness "sexy".
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Leave it to Mario to strand himself and Tari in the video game they were playing at that very moment.
  • Stock Footage: The transitional animation into the game is taken straight from Meta Runner.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Let's see... a knockoff version of Mario who antagonizes him and his friends, but is revealed to be deeply tormented inside, only to be received even more ridicule and be finished off, both by the real Mario... are we talking about Mango or are we talking about GRAND DAD?
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Tari sympathizes with Mango when he says he doesn't want to fight people. Not so much with Mario, though.
  • Warmup Boss: Mango in his first form. Lampshaded by the Boss Subtitles.
  • Women Are Wiser: Tari keeps a level head throughout this adventure. Then again, almost anyone is wiser than Mario.
