"Okay, now onto the video! Oh... it's about that time I tried to learn Japanese... Oh boy."
In this short episode, Saiko tries to teach Meggy how to speak Japanese. Unfortunately, it's not as easy as it initially seems...— Meggy at the start of the video, after a Meta Runner promotion
This episode of SMG4 provides examples of:
- As Long as It Sounds Foreign: After Meggy utterly fails to learn Japanese, Mario decides to cheer her up by teaching her how to speak his Italian gibberish. She succeeds instantly. This trope is lampshaded by Saiko:Saiko: That's not Italian! You're just speaking gibberish!
Mario: THAT'S RACIST - Berserk Button: Really, Boopkins, why did you think tying Meggy down and making her watch anime was a good way to teach her Japanese?
- Bilingual Bonus: All of the Japanese spoken in the video is real, including the incredibly long word "monokagekarakyuunitobidashitehitowoodorokaserutokinihassurukoe" (閄; yes, it really can be read that way), which roughly translates to "A noise made when jumping out of the shadows and surprising a person".
- Bottle Episode: The episode is touted as an "SMG4 Short" (being four minutes instead of the usual ten), came out between two of the regular weekly episodes, and is mostly set inside a single classroom.
- Camera Abuse: When Meggy starts beating the crap out of the anime characters Boopkins brought in, she accidentally knocks over the camera.
- Epic Fail: Meggy tries copying katakana on a chalkboard, only to wind up drawing a Lenny Face instead.
- Expospeak Gag: After teaching Meggy the easy words for "cat" (neko) and "dog" (inu), Saiko throws Meggy a curveball with "monokagekarakyuunitobidashitehitowoodorokaserutokinihassurukoe" (a very fancy way of describing a Jump Scare), with predictable results.
- Facepalm: Saiko does one at the end of the episode when Meggy rejects learning Japanese in favor of Mario's "Italian".
- Groin Attack: After Meggy wanders into an alley, she's confronted by the Duolingo Bird, who threatens to shoot her if she can't learn Japanese. Meggy incapacitates him with a single kick to the balls.
- My Hovercraft Is Full of Eels: Meggy tries to order food at a restaurant while in Japanese. What she actually says just scares the waiter away.Meggy: "I'd like to eat your liver please!" (Anata no kanzō o tabetai desu!)
- Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: "I'M GONNA BREAK YOUR NICO-NICO-KNEECAPS!"
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: At one point, Dr. Kawashima is brought in to teach Meggy kanji. Instead, she's so terrified by the giant floating head in front of her that she repeatedly throws things at him until he gives up and leaves (through the wall).
- This Is Gonna Suck: Not within the episode itself, but Meggy isn't exactly thrilled to find out what the episode is about after the Meta Runner promotion at the start of the video.
