Recap / SMG 4 Mario Opens A Can Of Beans

Go To

Mario opens a can of beans.

Mario can't open his can of beans, and neither can his friends. The only person capable of doing so effortlessly is the dreaded Peter Griffin, who in this universe is a being very much reviled and feared by all, especially Meggy, but there's no other solution. SMG4 reluctantly releases him from his prison to help Mario… and just as Meggy warned them, they instantly regret it.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Sports: As Meggy desperately tries to stop Mario and SMG4, a hilarious example occurs when, dressed as a referee, she kicks them into a goal-net that appears out of nowhere... using tennis scoring.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Meggy tries to pull this off after Peter turns on them but fails. To her credit, she had a bead on him; she just didn't expect him to turn into a green gelatinous goo and dodge her shot.
  • Call-Back: Meggy's freaking out when she realizes she's trapped inside the chest is nearly identical to how Mario reacted to being stuck in the void back in "MARIO'S OKAY". Additionally, Meggy's "big brain" being depicted as nothing but a large bowl of ramen and a toy Inkling inside a white void is similar to how the series has shown SMG4's and Mario's brains.
  • Company Cross References: The censor bar accompanying the Sound-Effect Bleep whenever the Glitchy Gang say the forbidden word ("Peter") is the one used in The Amazing Digital Circus.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The minute the gang are free, Mario easily takes down Peter and drags him all the way back to his own house by car. Of course, Meggy motivating him by telling him there's beans in the Griffin household helped.
  • The Dreaded: Peter Griffin, to the point where his name is censored like a swear word at first whenever a character needs to talk about him and Meggy goes into a panic when Mario first mentions him; sure enough, his first course of action is to knock the trio out with horrific Peter imagery before locking them in the chest he was kept imprisoned, and he's generally an all-around creep who will stab you in the back the first chance he gets.
  • I Told You So: Meggy doesn't just say this to SMG4; she outright screams it when his reluctant unlocking of Peter Griffin traps them and Mario in the chest he was imprisoned in.
  • Noodle Incident: When and how did the Glitchy Gang trap Peter in that treasure chest?
  • Off with His Head!: The first thing Mario does after his initial efforts to open the can of beans fail is to pull Luigi's head off his body, rip off Luigi's moustache, and roll the head toward the can – apparently Luigi's head can be a grenade. Naturally, Luigi is just fine, head and all, a few seconds later.
  • Outclassed at the Gym: Justified but played with. Near the start of the episode, Meggy is coaching SMG4 in weightlifting because the latter had made a New Year's resolution to get in shape. After Mario's interruption causes SMG4 to drop the barbell onto his own neck, Meggy picks up the barbell by its end with one hand and casually tosses it aside. SMG4 is not amused.
    SMG4: "Oh, c'mon!!"
  • Parody Episode: The whole episode is one to Family Guy down to the music, credit style, content rating ("SM-G4" instead of "TV-14"), stiff animation and random cutaway gag at the start.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite all what Peter did to him, Meggy, and SMG4; Mario offers him a can of beans, even if it turns out that what they are eating... isn't what they think is.
  • Self-Deprecation: When Mario blows up the refrigerator, a framed picture can be seen saying "Random Text Here Shameless Advertising happy birthday smg4! SMB1 fan". It has actually been hanging on Mario's wall for years, but this is one of the few times the viewer gets a clear look at it.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Mario suddenly begins speaking in full English to SMG4 to beg him not to dump the beans; normally he "speaks" in Italian gibberish and stock voice clips from other media and has to be subtitled. Of course, it's Played for Laughs and lampshaded by a baffled SMG4:
SMG4: What? What the f—, you have voice acting?
  • Take That!: To Family Guy in general, especially when Peter makes a lame joke (complete with Laugh Track) and Mario's face turns into a screen stating he is unable to find the funny.
