Recap / SMG 4 Mario Goes On Death Row

Go To

Mario finds out he's been put on death row. I wonder what his last meal will be?

While Mario helps Melony sell her manga dedicated to Axol at the mall, he picks a fight with Swagmaster after the latter callously dismisses Melony's work. Their antics get Mario and Chris arrested for accidentally hurting Barack Obama, and it's the death row for them unless Melony and Swagmaster can save them in time.

Tropes:

  • Apathetic Clerk: Karen, as per usual, though she shows it off here by blowing off Mr. Monitor's demand to help apprehend Mario, Melony, Swag, and Chris, saying that she doesn't get paid enough for that.
  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: Melony gives this to Swag when he tried to bail out her "sillier dipshit friend" Mario.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Mario is furious when Swag insults Melony's manga and makes her sad. His picking a fight with Swag is what eventually led to his incarceration.
  • Big "NO!": Mario’s reaction when his last meal vanishes into thin air in front of him.
  • The Bus Came Back: Hal Monitor appears again for the first time in a while.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Stuck in the big house thanks to Mario and Swagmaster's fight, Chris laments the fact that Ditzes are always cast with him.
  • Call-Back: Swag's lawyer commercial briefly shows Meggy in her courtroom apparel from WOTFI 2022. This also isn't the first time we've seen a hidden camera in Meggy's room.
  • Captivity Harmonica: Mario plays one in time to Chris smacking his head against the prison wall.
  • Death Glare: Mr. Monitor shoots a nasty one at Karen for refusing to help him apprehend Mario, Melony, and the Guards.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Mario is downright mesmerized by the methods of execution he and Chris would have to choose from.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Depressed that he's minutes away from death, Chris picks many bottles of alcohol as his last meal.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: While Melony places her order for 99 bombs on Uber Eats, the location is set to gm_bigcity, the name of the Garry's Mod map the video is made on. The map SMG3 uses to find her is centered just outside of Detroit.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Swag resorts to kidnapping Karen's children to coerce her into releasing Mario and Chris. Karen, in a terrifying Tranquil Fury, whips out a katana and cut him in half. Melony, who witnessed the whole scene, gently puts Cory down in shock.
  • Kick the Dog: What caused Mario to pick a fight with Swagmaster was the latter childishly demeaning Melony's manga – a manga dedicated to her late boyfriend Axol after Melony had to kill him due to Zero irreversibly possessing him.note  He comes around at the end, though.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Seeing Karen annihilate Swagmaster for holding Zack and Katie captive, Melony lets Cory go without issue, and gives him an Affectionate Gesture to the Head for good measure.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Melony apologizing for taking so long to release her manga feels rather... meta.
  • Mama Bear: Like Mario before him, Swag learns the hard way that Karen does not like those who mess with her children.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • To contrast Swag's Kick the Dog moment, Mario jumps to Melony's defense when his insults leave her upset, and deals two great blows to his ego. That he was a part of the whole crisis helps.
    • Swag ends the episode apologizing to Melony for calling Melony's manga terrible and for insulting Axol.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The only page we get to see of Mr. Axolotl is the axolotl recreating the "This Is Fine" meme.
    • Swag's law commercial is very reminiscent of Saul Goodman's commercials.
  • Skewed Priorities: Mario really could not care less about being executed (understandable since Death Is Cheap for him in his own universe) and is downright excited to receive his last meal, which is of course an absolutely enormous pile of pizza, pasta, cakes, and lord knows what else. He becomes severely depressed upon leaving jail because he didn't get to eat.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Mr. Monitor checks out of the episode after Melony makes an Uber Eats order from III's Coffee and Bombs. SMG3 shows up with a delivery cart full of explosives, which Mr. Monitor promptly crashes into. Boom.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Implied by Melony's scared face when she and Swagmaster are holding Karen's kids captive, like she knows Karen's not going to react to it well. Sure enough, she doesn't. Though it could also be an apologetic look.
