Recap / SMG4 - Grand Theft Mario

Go To

Meggy graduates and Mario does something very illegal.

Hooray! Meggy's graduation has finally arrived, and she's all too eager to get there on time with Mario and Tari… and in one piece, as she volunteers to drive Mario's new car in his stead. However, the trip is anything but smooth sailing because Mario never bothered to ask where the car, loaned to him by Bob, came from. When a group of Pianta mafiosi show up to take it, Mario finds he may need to break some laws.

  • Art Evolution: Tari gains a new model at the start of the episode to match several of the main OC cast's upgrades.
  • Big Ball of Violence: Happens in the background between Meggy and Aziz Yousi at the gas station.
  • Big Brother Instinct: For as much trouble as he causes, both directly and indirectly, the Pianta gang hurting Tari is all it takes to trigger Mario into doing, in his own words, "something very illegal." The fact they also interfered with Meggy's goal in the process meant Mario would not be holding back.
  • Call-Back:
    • Once again we see Hotel Bob next door to Meggy's house. Somehow he hasn't yet managed to gamble it away, but obviously something happened between him and the Pianta gang.
    • Just like in "A Happy Little Road Trip", parking in front of Meggy's home results in Mario being crushed under a vehicle (this time his own). Also, just like in "Every Luigi Is Personalized", Mario's "parking" job results in fire.
    • Aziz is back to overcharge for every little thing – his previous appearance was in "Mar10 Day" where he served as a merch vendor, selling Mario hats for 70,000 doubloons.
    • Dr Kawaiishima returns as Omnia Academy's Chancellor to give Meggy her diploma.
  • Chekhov's Gag: Mario wanting to go full-GTA. The first time, Meggy stops him from hijacking an innocent Koopa's car. Later, when the Pianta gang steal the car and hurt Tari to boot, Mario wastes no time turning the scene into a warped version of GTA (complete with stars) as he ruthlessly hunts them down. The credits music at the end of the episode is a mashup of the usual Super Mario Land 1 Overworld Theme with the GTA: San Andreas rap.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Twice.
    • Tari is no match whatsoever for the Pianta thugs. They also No-Sell her asking nicely.
    • Mario obliterates the whole Pianta gang in seconds with two mighty slaps to rescue "his" car.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Mario, of course. He drives his borrowed (stolen) car into shot at full-speed and lands it on its roof whereupon it immediately bursts into flames. Neither Mario, Tari, nor Meggy see this as anything other than a minor inconvenience, though it does prompt Meggy to insist on driving instead of Mario.
  • Eye Scream: Downplayed. When Bob tells an unsuspecting Mario to hide the car, the key lands in Mario's eye, but Mario doesn't seem to notice.
  • Funny Background Event: When Tari is pumping gas and Mario leaves to take a piss, Meggy and Aziz Yousi can be seen getting into an argument that escalates into violence.
  • Graduate from the Story: The main plot of the episode is Meggy attempting to get to her graduation on time. Luckily, despite the Piantas, Meggy is able to give her speech and graduate.
  • Jerkass:
    • The yellow Pianta who Mario, Tari, and Meggy discover in the trunk of the car and free is not only ungrateful, he siphons the car's gas (all while cursing Bob who isn't anywhere nearby) and then runs off to alert his boss to bring their full force down on the trio. Indeed, every Pianta in this episode is a jerk.
    • Aziz, as usual. His final line in the episode is yelling at Meggy that she didn't pay an "oxygen fee".
  • Skewed Priorities: At the end of the episode, Bob spends Meggy's graduation sitting by his now-damaged car with an angry expression the entire time.
  • Suddenly Voiced: This is the first time since "Into the Marioverse" that Celeste Notley-Smith gives Tari full voice acting for an entire episode instead of Tari using her usual voice-bank.
  • Tranquil Fury: When an injured Tari tells Mario the Pianta thugs stole his car, Mario calmly and politely asks Tari to excuse him for a moment… during which he goes full-GTA to destroy the Pianta thugs and get the car back.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Bob stole the car from the Pianta thugs, then dumped it on Mario, telling him to hide it but never explaining why. This leads to the thugs interfering with the trio's journey to reach Omnia Academy for Meggy's graduation.
