Recap / Rupert S 03 E 07 Rupert And The Nile

Go To

Rupert and his family picked a good time to take a holiday in Egypt — archaeologist Sir Humphrey Pumphrey has found the tomb of the ancient pharaoh Ramindas, whom legend says had the power to control the Nile itself, and donated all the pharoah's treasure to be put on display in the museum. Sure, the legend also says that disturbing his tomb will bring down the Revenge of Ramindas — stopping the Nile from flowing! — but everybody, especially Sir Humphrey, knows such "superstitious nonsense" is nothing to worry about... until the next day, when there's no more Nile River! While looking for water, Rupert and his new local friend Yusuf discover Sir Humphrey isn't as generous as he appeared to be, and it's up to them to reveal the truth, if they can escape Rupert's newest enemy...

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bad Boss: Sir Humphrey makes his lackey do all the physical labor while he stands around talking to Ramindas and laughing evilly.
  • Bring the Anchor Along: The boys are tied up back to back. They climb out of their prison tied together.
  • Complexity Addiction: Sir Humphrey makes The Brain look efficient.
  • Curse: The plot centers around the "Revenge of Ramindas."
  • Dramatic Irony: The audience is shown from the very beginning how Sir Humphrey will be able to take control of the Nile, before he puts his elaborate ruse in motion.
  • Engineered Heroics: Rather than just steal the treasure he finds, Sir Humphrey launches an elaborate scheme to donate it and then put it back to appease Ramindas so he can look like a hero.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Yusuf's camel Abednego lives up to his species' stereotype by trying to eat every piece of cloth within reach.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: Tugger complains, "All that stuff about that Ramindas fellow controlling the Nile is just a load of SHADES OF THE SPHINX! It's true!"
  • The Load: Abednego gives the boys away when they stumble across Sir Humphrey at the oasis and does it again when they're trying to follow him in secret.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Sir Humphrey insists on turning the Nile back on before they escape with the treasure, not because he doesn't want to doom an entire country of people to die of thirst, but because if the Revenge of Ramindas isn't undone, the authorities will return to inspect the tomb and find it looted.
  • Sealed Room in the Middle of Nowhere: Sir Humphrey leaves the two boys sealed in Ramindas' tomb to die what would have been a slow, agonizing death if they hadn't found a way out.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Sir Humphrey's mook points out an easier course of action at every step of the plan. They could just steal the treasure, they could charge people to see it, they could demand a huge sum to restore the Nile, they could just take the treasure and run without bothering to restore the Nile... Sir Humphrey passes it all up because he wants to look like the hero as well as have all the treasure.
  • Villain Opening Scene: A rarity for Rupert, the episode opens focusing solely on Sir Humphrey and Tugger for a while before Rupert even appears.
