Recap / Rune Scape Ancient Awakening

Go To

Overseer Siv asks the player to go to the ruins they unlocked in Dead and Buried- Aster and the Raptor escorted a team of archaeologists there, but they've been away for some time. The player agrees to go check on them, and Siv asks them to keep an eye on Aster, who's been acting strangely- Siv admits that it's understandable, but given everything that's going on, they can't afford any slip-ups. The player goes to the ruins, where they find the group, who are going through the tomb. Aster asks the player to collect some dragonkin artefacts from around the tomb, but when they do so, zombies appear and start attacking.

After killing the zombies, the player says that the archaeologists need to go back to the Guild, because it's not safe. The archaeologists say that they will once they've finished deciphering the inscription; Aster finishes translating the text on the map, which talks about a deadly, ancient weapon on the island on Ungael. The player muses that Zemouregal must want the weapon, whatever it is, and it might be connected to the dragon Siv mentioned. With that done, Aster agrees to escort the archaeologists back to the Guild, and the Raptor asks the player to meet him at the Jolly Boar Inn for a private conversation.

At the Inn, the player finds Bill, who's built a turret called 'Bill Jr', and if asked, admits that he didn't have a good relationship with his father. Once the conversation's over, the player meets the Raptor/Ellamaria in a back room, where she says that the owners of the Inn and the Raptor have a working relationship, so the Raptor can have private conversations there. If asked, she explains how she met Roald (she gatecrashed a party to confront him about the atrocities going on that he was doing nothing about, and he genuinely wanted to help), whether they'd talked about her revealing her identity (they did and she decided that the benefits of keeping the persona outweighed the benefits of revealing herself, so nothing's changing for now) and why her voice sounds different as the Raptor (Reldo enchanted the helmet to change the voice of whoever wears it) before getting to the point.

Ellamaria says that Zemouregal is likely going to attack Varrock again, and if he gets this new weapon, he might be successful. As such, they need to stop him, so it's time to go to Ungael. She suggests that the player go find Aster, whose knowledge of the dragonkin would be useful, and tells them to look near the Champion's Guild. The player goes there and finds Aster at a grave; Aster refuses to talk about it and heads back to the fort to start preparing, but they drop a letter as they leave, and reading the letter reveals that the grave is Bianca's and Ellamaria sent the location of it to Aster.

Back at the fort, Aster and the player brief everyone on what's happened. Siv says that she's commissioned a ship from the Fremennik, and it's docked outside the fort. She suggests sending a small, specialised team: the player, Aster (for translating dragonkin), the Raptor and Bill (for combat). Everyone else will stay behind and protect the fort. With that, the group sets off. A cutscene plays, where Zemouregal monologues about how Misthalin would have been his for the taking until the fort sprang up, so he's going to awaken the 'ancient power' on Ungael, destroy Fort Forinthry and take over Misthalin.

At Ungael, the group fight some zombies and then head further onto the island, where they find dragonkin ruins. Inside the ruins are the remains of a huge dragon, which Zemouregal is trying to reanimate. He summons waves of undead to stop the player from interfering with his ritual; the player and co fight them off, but Zemouregal successfully reanimates the dragon and uses him to destroy the player's ship. Abandoning them on the island, Zemouregal leaves to destroy the fort.

Aster blames themself, saying that this was their chance for redemption after they fucked up by bringing Bianca into the duchy. The group rally, saying that they refuse to simply give up and die on Ungael. They search the rest of the ruins and find an archive with a functioning device that holds information; once the player powers it, the device turns on, creating a magical construct of a dragonkin, 'the Archivist'. The Archivist explains that the island was used for the purpose of creating a perfect living weapon by a dragonkin called Zorgoth, who wanted to wipe out humanity. The closest Zorgoth got was the dragon who Zemouregal reanimated, who was almost perfect except that he wasn't aggressive and had no desire to harm anyone. As such, he was named 'Vorkath', or 'failure'.

As a result, Vorkath was killed, and since his remains were too big to send to 'the tomb', they were displayed under the tower. The Archivist explains that there's a one-way conduit in the room that was used to send corpses of failures to the crypt in the Wilderness, and the group use it to get back to the fort. They tell the others about what happened; the one advantage they have is the element of surprise, since Zemouregal doesn't know they've returned. However, there's no time for them to send for reinforcements- they have to get ready now. Everyone declares their willingness to defend the fort, and with that, quest complete!
